ABOUT US
Founded by Brendan Dobbin (Houston, Texas native) in 2021, Koolah Cafe has been a dream of Brendan’s since traveling to Australia to meet his in-laws. Laid-back vibes, engaging banter with baristas, and the incredible quality and meticulous pride taken with each cup of coffee had Brendan inspired. It was a spiritual awakening! After more than 20 years of working long hours in hospitality
, from dive bars to Sommelier/Wine Director roles in award winning fine dinning restaurants, Brendan yearned for little piece of his own sanctuary in the form of a coffee shop that could capture the fondest memories of his trips to Australia - relaxing in the cute coffee shops of Adelaide. With Australia’s coffee culture being the driving force behind opening a cafe, Brendan gives a nod to Australia in the cafe’s name, “Koolah”, an Aboriginal word for Koala. OUR NAME
“Koolah” is one of the many aboriginal words for Koala, Australia’s cutest and most iconic native animal. The Koala gets its name from an accent Aboriginal word meaning “no drink” because it receives over 90% of its hydration from Eucalyptus leaves (known as gum leaves). Like many animals, Koalas were an important part of Aboriginal culture and they feature in stories and legends. There are numerous names in Aboriginal languages including koolah. With Australia's coffee culture being the driving force behind this cafe, Founder & Owner Brendan Dobbin gives a nod to Australia in his cafe’s name, “Koolah”, an Aboriginal word for Koala. Brendan also happens to be married to an Australian, and his three children are Australian citizens. OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
