During the summer months, grandma would can her own tomatoes for the winter months. She always preferred to use her own homegrown vegetable to cook with at home. In the back of the house, grandma had a giant garden that she planted in spring. She made sure she had plenty of tomato plants in her garden. I loved it when grandma cooked the strawberry jam. I think I liked to eat fresh strawberries more than I liked to help her cook the jam. This was one of my aunt’s favorite preserves to eat in the morning on her biscuits. Grandma kept a few jars in her cellar for my aunt when she came to visit. It wasn’t that often grandma made this preserve. However, I know that during the holiday's grandma did cook up a few batches of the preserves to add to her holiday gift baskets that she passed out. During the summer months grandma, her neighbors, and my aunts were always in the kitchen canning different types of jams, jellies, fruits, and vegetables for winter. Grandma had a large garden at the back of the house where she grew all her own tomatoes to can for winter. From time to time my mother would prepare a meatloaf for us to eat. She had always loved cold meatloaf sandwiches and it seemed after she made her meatloaf, I had to eat these for lunch. I too enjoyed her meatloaf and didn’t mind eating the sandwiches for lunch. Aunt Hazel made a delicious teriyaki flavored chicken wings. She combined her own ingredients to make her sauce that she basted her chicken with. I have always loved chicken and especially chicken wings. When Aunt Hazel cooked this for dinner, she could never prepare enough chicken wings to feed us all.
