😔Gloria Steinem passed away yesterday at 92, after spending more than SIX decades REFUSING to accept that women should have less power, less freedom, or less control over their own lives.
She began as a journalist, famously going undercover as a Pl***oy Bunny in 1963 to expose the exploitation and working conditions women faced, and went on to become one of the most recognizable voices of the modern feminist movement. She co-founded Ms. magazine, helped found the National Women’s Political Caucus, and spent her life fighting for reproductive freedom, equal rights, political representation, and a world where women’s voices were actually heard.
But Gloria’s work was never just about women getting a seat at the table. Her feminism increasingly centered the idea that sexism couldn’t be separated from racism, class, sexuality, and other systems of inequality. She organized alongside women like Shirley Chisholm and Bella Abzug, marched, spoke, wrote, listened, and KEPT SHOWING UP well into her 80s and 90s✊🥹. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but maybe her bigger legacy is something harder to put on a medal: generations of women who grew up believing they had every right to take up space, speak loudly, make their own choices, and change the fu***ng rules.
