Unlike previous blog posts, I'm stepping out from behind the voice of the brand and standing behind my own voice. Hi, I'm Drake, the founder of Do Good Coffee Roasters.

In an authentic fireside chat of sorts, here are four lessons I've learned since opening Do Good's virtual doors.

1. Lean on your network
2. Limit your product line
3. Sales cures all
4. Stamina over sprints
Bonus: Dial in your processes early

Hey Do Good fam! Hard to believe that President's Day weekend last year we officially launched Do Good Coffee Roasters! (Took us a few years to lead up to that point 🤫)

Since our inception, we've valued two things; first, roasting small-batch coffee and getting it into your hands asap! Second, we prioritize supporting local (and sometimes global) charities/foundations! With your help we've been able to donate to six unique foundations with proceeds coming from your coffee orders ☕️

Thanks for the supportive comments, for sticking with us as we grow, and for repping our brand! Bonus points for those who put our die cut stickers on their garage fridges! Cheers to our 1 year anniversary 🥳 🎉

🤟

More to come,

You’ve made it! It’s the last installment of our Coffee Literacy Series! We took the time to decode some of the common terms on the front of coffee bags.

The crux of this blog series is this: understanding the details on coffee labels allows you to choose the (subjectively) best coffee for your taste buds while objectively knowing as much as possible.

Part 3's main point? In specialty coffee, flavor notes come from the processing method and altitude in which the coffee was grown, not from any added flavors.

Today, individually and collectively, we pause amid the increasing pace of our society to be thankful. Thankful for what we have, who we are, and who we are becoming.

At Do Good Coffee Roasters we are thankful for our incredible community of customers, partners, and supporters. We couldn't do this without you.

It’s that time again! We’re happy to share that with the sales from the month of October, we donated to the RISE Fellowship by Sundara!

Running a small business is a challenge all its own, but the RISE Fellowship by Sundara knows that fact and takes it a step further by coming alongside women to build businesses that meet health and hygiene needs through mentorship and resources.

“Our RISE Fellowship provides mentorship, seed funding and resources to female entrepreneurs living in low to middle income countries. We empower impactful entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses that make a lasting impact in their communities.”

Not only that, but Sundara coordinates an Emergency Aid program for communities and parts of the world in dire need, all with products you and I take for granted each day: masks, hand soap, and clean drinking water.

If you’d like to learn more about this organization and donate with us, visit the Do Good website under “Our Story” and “Giving Back”.

Welcome back to our three part Coffee Literacy blog series! We’re decoding common coffee details over the coming weeks to give you confidence picking the perfect specialty coffee for your tastes.

Guess what? “Coffee consumption has soared to a two-decade high as Americans brew up new post-COVID routines” (National Coffee Association). If you’re one of the people who has “increased coffee consumption away from home by 8% since January 2021” or continued to brew coffee at home, you’re likely taking part for the caffeinated benefits. As important as it is, understanding the correlation with roast level will help you maximize that caffeine intake!

Here’s the main point. The lighter the roast, the more caffeine there will be in the cup of coffee.

Why is this? Like any other food product, the longer an item is cooked the more nutrients, sugars, and organic compounds are cooked out. Light roasted coffee contains the most caffeine because those beans spend the least amount of time in the roaster. On the other hand, Dark roasted coffee contains the least amount of caffeine.

As far as how this relates to the taste, light roasted coffee tends to smell floral, have more of an acidic taste, and results in a thinner cup of coffee. Those floral aromas can also come across as grassy, sour, or raw. Dark roasted coffee tends to smell woody, earthy, and spice forward. Dark roasted coffee doesn’t have the acidity that light roasts do and may be easier on the stomach but runs the risk of being a “heavier” cup of coffee with more coffee particles extracted into the cup.

With a portion of the sales from September, we are proud to share that we contributed to Alex's Lemonade Stand (ALSF)! September is known as Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Despite all the funding around researching cancer cures, less than 5% of that is allocated to Pediatric Cancer research specifically. ALSF hopes to change that.

"ALSF started with one lemonade stand, hosted by our founder Alexandra “Alex” Scott in her front yard which raised $2,000. Alex was just 4 years old and battling neuroblastoma when she asked to donate the money so doctors can find cures for all children battling cancer."

We're thrilled to donate to this foundation, specifically for their Neuroblastoma research fund. Visit their website to read more about this worthy foundation! We hope to see that 5% funding increase each and every year!

Overwhelmed by reading coffee bags? Wanting to pick the perfect option for your taste buds but don't know where to start? 😕

In this three part blog series, we’re going to decode common coffee details over the coming weeks to give you confidence picking the perfect specialty coffee for your tastes.

Don't worry, we're starting easy! When it comes to the Name and Region details, here's a quick hitting overview. (Check out the blog post in our bio for an extended read!)

Both Name and Region tend to be one and the same on specialty coffee labels. For example, on our latest release, Ethiopia Yirga Cheffe Chelchele. Contrast that to “Pumpkin Spice Coffee”, “Morning Blend”, or “Ethiopia Dark”.

Why be so specific as to mention the very farm the coffee was grown on? Two reasons: Sourcing and Transparency 🧐

Even if you’re a master coffee brewer/barista, if the green unroasted coffee comes from a lesser quality farm, the end result will never be the best it could be with a higher quality single-origin bean. Exposing the specific farm the bean is sourced from leads to a higher transparency in the supply chain which is better for everyone involved!
