September is Sepsis Awareness Month. And for me, this one hits very close to home.

Sepsis isn’t just something I read about or heard about. I battled it. And I came frighteningly close to not making it out alive.

There was a time when my family wasn’t sure I was going to be here to celebrate another birthday, another anniversary, or simply another ordinary day. Sepsis took me to a place I never imagined I would have to fight my way out of.

I’m incredibly grateful to be here today. Grateful for my family, for the people who prayed for me, for the medical professionals who fought alongside me, and for the strength God gave me when I needed it most.

But my experience taught me something I believe everyone should know:

Sepsis can happen quickly, and knowing the signs can save a life.

Watch for warning signs such as:

• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Difficulty or rapid breathing
• Fast heart rate or weak pulse
• Fever, chills, or feeling unusually cold
• Extreme pain or discomfort
• Clammy or sweaty skin
• Very little or no urine

If someone has an infection and suddenly seems much sicker than they should, don’t ignore it. Trust your instincts. Get medical help immediately and tell the medical team that you are concerned about sepsis.

I never thought I would be sharing a message like this because of my own experience. But if telling my story helps even one person recognize sepsis early and get the help they need, then everything I went through has a purpose.

I’m still here. I’m grateful. And I don’t take a single day for granted.

Know the signs. Take action. Speak up. Save a life.

Thank you so much for all of the birthday wishes, messages, and comments!

This birthday was truly the best one ever—and an incredible gift. I couldn’t help but smile because, as many of you know, there was a very real chance I wouldn’t be here to celebrate this birthday. But thanks to God, my amazing wife and family, and every single one of you who prayed for me, I’m here—and hopefully around to annoy you all for many, many years to come!

If you haven’t heard the story of what happened, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to fill you in.

I’ll end with one last thought. Do what my favorite T-shirt says: Always, Always, Always “Find a Reason to Smile.”

Life can throw some incredibly tough times at us, and sometimes it can feel impossible to find something to smile about. But trust me—there is always a reason to smile. Sometimes, you just have to look a little harder to find it.

Thank you all again for making my birthday so special. I’m incredibly grateful to be here.

Cold front coming! Be safe y’all!

I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone that came to Big Hops today. You don’t even know how much it meant to me to see all of you. It was exactly what I needed and I can’t put into words how happy it made me.
A special Thank You goes out to my beautiful wife and amazing mom for helping out tonight.
Now I might need to rest for 24 hours to recover but it was so worth it.
Thanks again and I love you all!
Justin

Good Afternoon Everyone. I haven’t been cleared to start slingin schnitzel yet but I’d like to show my appreciation for all of the prayers and encouraging comments and messages. I won’t have the food truck but this Tuesday I’ll be at my usual Tuesday hangout Big Hops at around 6:30 and I’ll have some treats to show my appreciation. I miss seeing all of you and it’d mean a lot to me to see your smiling faces.
Love you all!
Justin

God Is Good!!!
I wanted to thank everyone for all of the prayers and encouragement through this difficult time. I truly appreciate and love every single one of you.

I also wanted to thank you for all of the comments, messages, and text. I am working on responding to every one but it’ll take some time. So many have shared stories and told me how much you enjoy Hüftgold that I get emotional reading them and have to take a break.

Take Care and have an amazing day!

I created a caring bridge page for my husband Justin. My hope is to provide updates on his progress because it’s hard to make sure I have contacted everyone and not left someone out.

We wanted to give everyone an update on Justin’s condition.

He is officially out of surgery, his third surgery in less than a week, and the doctors were able to repair the issues with his bowels. We are incredibly thankful for that answered prayer and for the amazing medical team caring for him.

Right now, he is still considered in critical condition. His kidneys are struggling, and there are still several concerns the doctors are closely monitoring. To help his body heal, they are keeping him sedated and paralyzed for the next 3–5 days because his abdomen is extremely weak, and even too much strain from breathing or movement could cause complications.

This has all happened very suddenly, and our family is trying to take things one hour at a time. As many of you know, he works tirelessly running his food truck here in San Antonio, and with him unable to work and my mom staying by his side at the hospital, things are becoming financially overwhelming.

We’ve created a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses, bills, and supporting our family during his recovery. If you’re able to donate, share, or simply keep praying for him, we would be deeply grateful.

Thank you to everyone who has checked in, prayed, sent messages, and shown love to our family. We truly feel the support and are holding onto faith that he will continue fighting and healing day by day.

To all of our loyal customers, friends, and supporters —

We wanted to let everyone know that due to a recent medical emergency, Justin underwent emergency surgery and is currently in the hospital recovering. While he is healing and doing well, recovery will be a slow process and he will need time to rest and regain his strength.

Because of this, the food truck will be closed for an unknown amount of time. We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support during this difficult season for our family.

We are incredibly thankful to the doctors, nurses, and medical team who have been caring for him, and most importantly, we are thankful to God for watching over him and guiding his recovery.

Please continue to keep him and our family in your prayers. We look forward to serving you all again when the time is right.

With love and gratitude,
The Evans Family
