We laid our sweet boy to rest yesterday underneath his favorite tree. He was such a good dog and a loyal companion to Kim. For many years, he took up residence in the office and was the de facto emotional support for our staff. His loss leaves an enormous hole in our world but we are better for having had him in our lives. Rest well and chase many squirrels Buc-ee. 🩷🩷

Five years ago today, we were very close to our “soft opening”. Five years later, we are so grateful for the business we’ve built, but even more grateful for the relationships that have resulted. Throughout the years we’ve seen it all. We’ve celebrated births, grieved losses, and observed milestones. We’ve hosted baby showers, wedding receptions, bar and bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, game nights, live music, and the list goes on. We have seen graduations, and in the space of five years expanded our family by a few grandkids (we’ll add a sixth in a few short days).

All of this to say: it hasn’t always been easy. There were times when it seemed like we would crash and burn. But it’s always been worth it. To see our community embrace what we do and to support them in return is the literal heartbeat of our coffee shop.

Thank you San Angelo for five years of support and love. Here’s to many many more! Cheers!

I come from a long line of proud veterans. Two of my grandfathers served in WWII. One in the Navy and the other in the army, serving in France and Belgium. They were the greatest generation, no doubt. My grandmother enlisted at 17 (maybe 16) back when you could lie about your age more easily 🙂 She was a WAC in the Army Air Corp and her name is enshrined at the women’s WWII memorial in DC.

My dad was drafted during Vietnam and served in Korea. My father in law was a sailor in that same war. Two of my uncles fought in Vietnam too, one a Navy corpsman attached to a USMC force recon unit and the other a Ranger. Both of those guys were bona fide bad asses! Another uncle was a sailor post-Vietnam and served on aircraft carries in the Philippines and elsewhere.

I did my bit in the USAF and, by comparison, contributed much less than those other family heroes. I am honored to have served my country alongside some of the best people I have ever known; many of whom bear the scars of their time served, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

Tomorrow is a solemn day. We remember, we honor, and we remind ourselves of the cost of freedom. We also celebrate what so many sacrificed to provide us. So, enjoy the day. Barbecue, spend time with family, and remember that it is the sacrifice of veterans like so many you know, who make it possible.
