September is International Literacy Month!

And what better way to celebrate and support than with our Literacy Latte made with house made honey-cinnamon syrup and chocolate 📚

Literacy is the main focus of Altrusa International of Altrusa. The purpose of many of our projects is to get books in the hands of area kids. We donate books in December to the Title I schools as well as to many area children’s charities. In October to do a Book “N Treat in conjunction with the Parks and Rec Halloween Party. We also distribute books at Juneteenth as well as at Daddy Bud Day, just to name a few. Our literacy projects include reception for GED graduates as well as those who complete the Partners 4 Success programs at salina Adult Education Center.

A new project that was started a couple of years ago is The Period Project. We learned that many girls were missing school as they didn’t have menstrual products. The nurses at all USD 305 schools now have product available for any girl who needs it. We have also provided product the other Salina County as well as other area schools. The Salina Public Library, Salina Family Healthcare, Salina Shares and the Food Bank have product.

Altrusan donate hundreds of pairs of gloves, hats and scarves to area Title I students each year. We provide fresh-baked items to Morrison House each month, and we support Salina Shares throughout the year. In partnership with Salina Selfie Station, we write letters from Santa to the kids who write letters to Santa.

Altrusa International of Salina, KS, is a local civic organization which has been active in Salina since 1944. Membership is open to those interested in community service. For more information, email us at [email protected]
