The boxes of Mithai that we had in front of us, two each of three special mithais, had me drooling even before I had gotten around to touching the offerings, let alone eating them.

Kaju Katri (cashewnut fudge), Bombay Halwa and the most gorgeous shapes carved out of cashewnut butter/fudge and stuffed with dried fruit and nut fillings and garnished with silver leaf and saffron and fruit and veg dyes.

Mithais from Mohan Ni Mithai in Surat. Mohan being Sweety’s maternal grandfather who started the business from his basement in Surat. Now the shop is legendary and has outposts in Mumbai.

Tasting the mithai made it crystal clear as to why people often say, “Surat Nu Jaman. Ane Kashi Nu Maran”. Which translates into English as “you eat in Surat and die in Kashi”.

Mohan Ni Mithai from Surat has rightly earned its place in the annals of culinary history.

Having feasted on the mithai from this temple of mithai in Surat, Sweety and her family have gotten me that much closer to finding peaceful passage when I make it to Kashi.

If you are in Surat or Mumbai, or have someone coming from there, beg and insist that they bring you mithai from Mohan Ni Mithai. Your life will be sweeter for it without doubt.
