I don’t normally cross-pollinate my content from my personal Facebook but today while I’m stuck in a brace with my leg up at home, a video I posted a year ago today popped up and it was exactly what my mental health needed.

We’re blessed by so many natural treasures in this state. We live on the banks of the Huron but rarely do we go and see it. Nothing is more beautiful than the sky over Huron and nothing is so exhilarating as swimming its waters, warmed by the sun on the surface but the ice from the depths nipping at your toes.

I hope you all get out and surround yourself in Michigan wilderness this summer.

Happy birthday to my amazing wife, Kari!

You might think the most important person with Pearl’s Deli is me because I was the one showing up every day and making all the sandwiches, but you’d be wrong.

Kari is the one who supported me when I had a midlife crisis and decided to quit my steady job to make sandwiches. She’s the one who picks me up when I’m down. She’s also the one making sure I stick to my Physical Therapy so I can get back to work.

As a couple we weren’t inevitable. Kari’s dog, Bubs, fell in love with me first. At that point she couldn’t get rid of me for fear of breaking his heart. Now if I even imagine a life without her it brings tears to my eyes.

Love you more every year, darling!

Michigan is experiencing a significant outbreak of cyclosporiasis. The best way to avoid getting sick are habits that everyone should be making already:

1. Wash hands before handling foods.
2. Rinse and clean your produce.
3. Any prepared food that you don’t intend to eat promptly should be refrigerated immediately.
4. Drink filtered water.

A lot of people believe that the increasing oversight and regulation involving food safety is government overreach but the reality is we’re losing the war against bacteria, viruses, allergens, and parasites. They are getting smarter and sneakier and we’re stuck with the immune systems we’re born with.

Surgery was successful and this might be the painkillers and the hard brace that keeps me from bending my knee speaking, but I’m already feeling better than I was beforehand!

Even the surgeon seemed to be surprised by how well it went.

Happy 5th Birthday, Pearl!

When the shelter warns you that a dog is “a lot” believe them, then adopt her anways!

Pearl came into our home and made it her own. She keeps us on our best behavior. She even barks at us if we stay up too late. She has the soul of a queen and the heart of a saint.
