Most people will look at these photos and keep scrolling.
That’s okay.
Each of these was passed around in church today. Each one, treasures left behind from a longtime Casa Mañana customer who passed away recently.
Before today, I had no idea Larry was a Korean War veteran.
As I held each one, I noticed how bent & worn they were. They looked like every mark had been earned the hard way. Each one felt like a small badge of this man’s contribution to our country.
Larry was a quiet gentleman. Always kind. Always a friendly smile. Often helping others without anyone really knowing.
It also hit me that when Casa Mañana was just getting started 75 years ago, men like him were serving far away from home.
He probably never thought of himself as a hero.
I don’t think he needed anyone to make a big deal about him.
But seeing Larry’s dog tags reminded me that a lot of the freedom and life we enjoy today was carried by quiet people who simply did their duty.
Memorial Day is about remembering those who NEVER CAME HOME.
As families gather, camp, travel, and start summer this weekend, I hope we can all take a moment to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our country.
From our Casa Mañana family to yours, we wish you a meaningful Memorial Day.
