Twin sisters Nell Hoce and Sandra Harvell grew up on a small farm in Adger, Alabama, and moved to Houston when they were teenagers where they lived much of their lives before semi-retired, and moving with their husbands to Whitehouse, Texas. Which brought back memories of their mother, Wanda Farley, (known as Mamaw to her grandkids,) would start making the pies in the morning and after hours in th
e kitchen, frying the pies in a skillet using whatever fruit was available on the farm at the time. No matter how many she made they never seemed to last very long when the twin sisters and their four other siblings got ahold of their mother’s pies. With fond childhood memories of their mother’s homemade fried pies, decided to make the pies to sell at First Monday Trade Days in Canton each month. Soon thereafter in September 2006, the sister’s went into business together and using their mother’s recipe opened the original Mamaw’s Fried Pies. Since it was their mother’s recipe it was only appropriate to name their pie shop after their mother and Mamaw’s Fried Pies was born. After nearly 10 years of making delicious fried pies for their adoring public, the sister’s decided it was time to retire from the pie business. Just as the sister once rediscovered their mother’s recipes the relaunched Mamaw’s Fried Pies looks to give a new generation a taste of down home cooking served with a side of love the same way the original Mamaw did to her daughters and the same way Nell and Sandra did to East Texas for years.
