I noticed last January that Fritz Lang’s silent classic ‘Metropolis’ has now entered the public domain. I am far from the first person to compose a new soundtrack for the film; Giorgio Moroder, Jeff Mills, and probably others have tread this ground before me. Even so I’d like to offer my own take on it.

The movie is very much worth seeing as a cultural artifact of Weimar Germany. It is sort of a ‘Gothic-Sci-fi’, censored by the N***s and decried as reactionary by the communists, the plot is very prescient to our own times, and incidentally is set in 2026.

It is a rather long film, nearly 2.5 hours, so there will be a short intermission. I will be composing the soundtrack live on a collection of synthesizers and drum machines, in addition to piano. While not explicitly a ‘horror movie’, it is certainly dark and creepy so ‘Devil’s Night’ seems a very appropriate time to perform this. And so I am happy to invite you to Birdy's Beatery on 10/30 at 5PM to visit the 2026 of Fritz Lang’s (and my) imagination!
