As the Germans say, “Eat breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king and dinner like a poor man”.
Special this weekend: Abendbrot
Abendbrot, literally "evening bread", a variety of German cold cuts: sliced meats, sausages and cheese served with German pickles, side of coleslaw, and German bread and pretzels with butter - is usually set out and eaten as a family with everyone assembling his or her favorite open-faced “sandwiches” from the choices available at the table.
It’s not everyone’s first choice, but my family still eats nothing but Abendbrot every night. It’s a cultural thing – we simply don’t eat warm dishes at night but only German bread/pretzels with cold deli meat, cheese and sometimes cold veggies.
According to cultural scientists, the German custom of eating cold food in the evening dates back to the 1920s. At that time, industry increasingly dominated everyday life - in contrast to the more agricultural structures in countries such as Italy and France. There were more and more canteens in factories. Those who ate there at lunchtime often no longer wanted a warm meal in the evening. Since the work became less physically demanding thanks to technology, many preferred it to be lighter in the evening: bread, deli meat, cheese, a bit of raw veggies, that's it.
After the war, supper became even more popular. At that time, the number of employed women also increased. The quickly made supper became a tradition in many families. Our Abendbrots were never boring though. Germany is known to be proud of hundreds of types of bread and cold cut meats, variety of different cheeses, that all is then decorated with pickles, radishes, tomatoes, or hard-boiled eggs.
The bread, we offer at the restaurant is half baked in Germany, frozen, shipped over here, and we finish the baking in the oven. My children have never ate any other bread than this ever since they are born. The German bread is still the best (for us)! Most of the meat, I still get imported, as well as some of the cheese.
