Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Symptoms usually appear in early childhood, often making walking, running, jumping and climbing stairs difficult. As the condition progresses, it can also impact breathing and heart function.

Monday’s World Duchenne Awareness Day is a chance to raise awareness and advocate for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people living with Duchenne.

This post is a little different for me because this one is personal.

Today is World Duchenne Awareness Day, and I want you to meet the reason I’m wearing this shirt — my 3-year-old nephew, Ryan.

I could write a long caption about what Duchenne muscular dystrophy is and what it means for Ryan and our family.

But I’d rather you hear it from me. ❤️

So… is Blend a franchise? Nope. 😂

We get asked this all the time, so we thought it was time to introduce ourselves.

Blend is locally and family owned. ❤️

I’m Emily — mom of four, attorney turned entrepreneur, runner, Girls on the Run coach, and usually the person saying, “Okay, hear me out… I have another idea for the menu.” 😂

I LOVE running the Riverwalk trail, so if you’ve ever had a random woman run past you saying “GOOD MORNING!”… there’s a pretty good chance it was me. 👋

My husband, Jonas, is the behind-the-scenes guy. He handles the paperwork, numbers and all the back-end business stuff nobody sees — and somehow keeps up with all my ideas. 😂

We have four kids — Avalyn, Bennett, Charlotte and Riley — who have all been part of Blend, plus our very loved dog, Oreo. 🐾

We bought Blend in May 2024 when we heard it was going to close because I believed this little place was worth saving.

And our mission is pretty simple:

Make healthy food that tastes so good, you forget it’s healthy.

Real-fruit smoothies made with whole ingredients. Fresh food. Nothing ever fried. And plenty of options that make eating better actually enjoyable.

There’s no corporate office behind Blend. It’s our family, our team and a whole lot of experimenting, taste-testing and listening to our customers.

So when you support Blend, you’re supporting a real local family — and we appreciate it more than you know. ❤️
