Preparation of a Seedling Nursery Site
A nursery site or seedling production area is a place where young plants are raised under suitable soil and water conditions before they are transplanted to the main farm. It is a specially prepared area used for germinating seeds before planting them in the field.
Nursery sites can also be used for seed multiplication. Seedling production areas are commonly called nursery beds. The same type of crop should not be planted repeatedly on the same nursery bed for at least three years. For example, if tomatoes are being grown, tomatoes should not have been previously planted in that same area to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
Requirements for a seedling nursery site include:
Young seedlings should be protected from excessive heat and strong winds through shading.
The nursery area should be fenced properly to protect the seedlings from damage.
Seedlings should be hardened before transplanting.
Watering should be reduced 1–2 weeks before transplanting while gradually exposing the seedlings to sunlight.
Records of the seedlings and planting activities should be properly documented.
Drainage channels around nursery beds should be raised, especially during the rainy season, to prevent flooding
