On June 19, 1865, the news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years late, but freedom all the same.

Visiting family in Mississippi as a kid, that history was all around you, in a way we don’t always stop to feel up here in New Hampshire. It stuck with me.

You can’t tell the story of barbecue without this day. The craft, the patience, the whole hog. So much of it built by Black pitmasters who rarely got the credit. We cook in their tradition every time we light the smokers.

Collards, purple hull peas, sweet potatoes, grits — soul food, suffering & resilience turned into something worth gathering around.

Today we honor those who gave us these traditions and foods. We hope you’ll join us.

These hot honey glazed smoked drumsticks from Vernon Family Farm are delish! Juicy, tender with the right amount of smoke and topped with some scallions from Nerdy Turnip Farm. Try them this weekend before they’re gone!

VFF is a family owned and operated farm in Newfields that’s farming the right way. They also have awesome educational events and entertainment. You can find us there with our trailer for 3 of their agritourism events.

So I messed up two weeks and didn’t get grits ordered in time. They come from Anson Mills all the way down in South Carolina, they mill on Mondays, and there was a Monday holiday…

But now GRITS ARE BACK!

The staff and I are very happy because we love our Anson Mill old fashioned medium white grits. Even if we put cheese in them (I prefer without cheese like most southerners).

Get some grits, be happy.
