BIG THINGS ARE COMING

We are welcoming El Rey De Las Tripletas Cafe to the Mercantile this month! We are so so excited to bring Puerto Rican comfort food to Center City

Plus we have our second Mercantile Social with Elevate Dance Center Rochester and Salsero Roc tomorrow night 9/4 7-11pm $10 cover

AND we are hosting Downtown Rochester, NY Game Night on Main 9/17 5-7pm with games, live music, food, drinks, and Buffalo Bills pre-game before they face the Detroit Lions.




FRINGE FEST IS AROUND THE CORNER and so is the Mercantile! We are less than 10 minutes away from a majority of the Fringe Fest venues and we have all the food, drinks, restrooms, and vibes you need to fully enjoy the festival.

As a continuation of our Sibley history series, we go through why the founders came to Rochester and how they found their first successes opening the Sibley, Lindsay, and Curr co. store. A special thanks to Central library of Rochester & Monroe County for making their archives accessible to continue researching the founding of the store and the men who opened it.

Did you know that looking at local history artifacts and archives was so easy to do?

Central library of Rochester & Monroe County has a local history and genealogy department that is chock full of historical photos directories of downtown Rochester and archives from before Rochester was known as flour (and flower) city.

I was so excited to find archives as well preserved and interesting as what I found in my first trip to the local history department because I will have to go back. There was too much to look at and very little time to do it. But an original bill of sale from 1879 was one of the highlights but this note from a rochesterian including a bill of sale from 1914 regarding a sewing machine that was passed down from generation to generation was probably one of the most heartfelt things I found.

The sewing machine up on our 5th floor is from that same time. Most likely it was made between 1910 and 1915 and also most likely was used in the manufacturing centers of Sibley which was something that helped the department store pull away from its competitors in the local area.
