It takes a strong community to build a legacy! 🛠️❤️
One of our amazing customers recently brought in these incredible newspaper clippings from Sunday, May 11, 1958, and we just had to share them! They tell the ultimate story of resilience and show how Oscar's Grill rose from the ashes after a devastating fire completely destroyed the original restaurant on February 20th of that year.
In just 59 days, original owner Oscar Inscoe and a dedicated team of local businesses completely rebuilt Oscar’s from the ground up:
• Rufus Hux General Contractors handled the general construction.
• Fitts-Crumpler Electric Co. wired up the "modern business" and lighting.
• Rural Plumbing & Heating Co. got the kitchen utilities ready to cook.
• Lindale Dairies ("Your Hometown Dairy") was right there to supply high-quality dairy.
Swipe through to see the original crew standing proudly behind the brand-new counter and the amazing outpouring of support from our 1958 neighbors. Check out that vintage 5-digit phone number at the bottom, too: Phone 7-4874! 📞
Nearly 75 years later, we are still so proud to be a part of this thriving community. Thank you, Roanoke Rapids, and the surrounding communities for standing by us since day one! 🍳🥞
Does anyone recognize any of the faces standing behind the counter in the first photo? If you know who they are, or if your family has stories about eating here in the 50s and 60s, please drop them in the comments below! 👇
