Many customers ask us about “spumoni”… but let’s start from the beginning 😊

The correct name is spumone: a great classic of Italian tradition, considered the precursor to gelato.
Originating in Naples in the 19th century, it is a rich and visually striking dessert, consisting of layers of gelato (such as pistachio, chocolate, or hazelnut), with a soft or crunchy center of dried fruit or candied fruit, and may include a layer of sponge cake. The whole thing is shaped in metal molds, which give it its typical cylindrical or dome-shaped form, with a texture halfway between ice cream and semifreddo.
In Sicily, it’s also called “pezzo duro” literally translated as "Hard piece".
With Italian emigration, spumone crossed the ocean, inspiring the famous “spumoni” in the United States… which, however, is very different from the original: since it is simply a combination of three ice cream flavors (usually chocolate, pistachio, and strawberry or cherry).
One final fun fact: if you ask for “spumoni” in Italy… they’ll give you more than one,
since “spumoni” is the plural of spumone. 😃❤️🍨
