We've seen the recent public post regarding our restaurant, and it is deeply disappointing to see our 20-year history in this town misrepresented.
1. The "New Location" & The Rent Hike :
On January 20th, the landlord showed us a potential new location. However, the rent the landlord demanded for this space was nearly triple our current rate. This massive increase made it impossible for us to continue the business we love. After 20 years of service, We made the heartbreaking decision to retire and began planning our life after the restaurant.
2. The Agreed Buyout :
The landlord wanted us to vacate as soon as possible so they could begin renovating the shopping plaza. Moving out early meant a significant financial loss for us, including our expensive equipment and lost income. After negotiations, the landlord agreed to a $40,000 buyout and one month of waived rent in exchange for us vacating early. We agreed to move out by March 31st. The landlord promised to return with the paperwork for us to sign.
3. The Reversal & Threats :
Instead of the promised contract, we received threatening letters in February and March, demanding we vacate by March 31st or face legal action. The landlord reneged on the $40,000 agreement entirely, effectively forcing us out while refusing to honor the promised compensation.
4. The "Lawyer" Interaction :
The landlord claims we "threatened" them through a lawyer. In reality, we consulted a highly professional attorney who simply called to gather information and seek a fair resolution based on the landlord's earlier promises. There were no threats—only a request for fairness.
5. Our Choice: Family and Peace Over Litigation :
After consulting with family and friends, We made a difficult but firm choice. We had already planned our retirement since January, and we realized that while money is important, our time with family is far more precious. We decided not to waste our lives on an endless, exhausting legal battle.
6. The Final Result :
Because we chose peace, we vacated the premises on March 31st as requested. The landlord got exactly what they wanted without paying us a single penny.
