Hungry Locktender

After much soul-searching we have shuttered The Hungry Locktender. At least for the time being. Over the past 14 months it’s been my good fortune to host, chat with, and in some instances, get to know, many delightful people. Your support and good wishes have been phenomenal.

Unfortunately, irrespective of the great reviews we’ve enjoyed, we simply haven’t been able to generate sufficient traffic to make the café viable. Additionally, the challenges we’ve met attempting to recruit and retain kitchen staff have thwarted our plans for dinner service at weekends (we opened briefly with a full house many evenings) and our online meals-to-go offerings.

My personal transition to cook was never part of the plan. I took over in the kitchen because we simply had no kitchen staff. After a couple of sleepless nights and a sharp learning curve, I very quickly embraced my new role!

It has been an honor and a pleasure to cook for you. Please continue to follow us for updates. Thank you!

The Hungry Locktender, Riegelsville

Ride your bike down the canal and make a pit stop at this great spot on 611 for breakfast and lunch. The Croque, as rendered by this café, looks like a grilled cheese on steroids. The sauce, the cheese and, oh my goodness, you can’t stay hungry after it. Hop back on the bike and you’re good for hours. Up the ante and make it a Croque Madame, which includes an egg.”

Our take on the French-Canadian dish, Poutine. Herb-roasted potatoes, a sprinkling of Gruyère Cheese, and smothered in Beef Gravy. The latter, a multi-day process. We make a broth with vegetables and bones from free-range cows. The beef cuts that go into our steak Croque sandwich are then slowly braised overnight in the broth, and the ensuing braising liquid is the basis for our gravy. The weather clearly doesn’t know it’s now summer- so warm up with a dish of Poutine on this soggy Thursday.

Father’s Day is here and so are our specials! Bring Dad in for our version of poutine featuring herb roasted potatoes with cheese smothered in beef gravy!!

Inspired by the Crispy Salmon Skin on Sushi menus and that New York staple, Bagel and Lox, we got a little creative. The salmon skin is from fish poached in lemon and butter for our From The Sea frittata. Crispy, creamy, tangy, salty… on the Specials Board until it’s gone.
