It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our employee, friend, and brother, Clay Forbes. This comes as an extreme shock and has shaken our Bella Vino familyโwe are simply not whole without him.
Clayโs roots run deep here. Ouray native and graduate of Ouray High school. He began at the original Bon Ton in 1993 and remained a constant through its evolution into Bella Vino. He was the longest-standing member of that legacy and a true cornerstone of what we have built. Alongside our friend and former business partner Tim E, he helped build a truly special brunch and restaurant dinner experience. That amazing candied bacon and delicious quiche? That was Clay. From grill and line cook originally to his role as our prep cook and โsalad guru,โ Clay knew every inch of the kitchen and brought both talent and humor to it daily.
Clay was genuinely the kindest soul. He always had a way of making people smile, whether through his jokes or his pantry collection of quirky produce that somehow became part of his charm. Our kitchen will not be the same without our biggest Avs fan and devout vinyl music fanatic.
When we moved to Ridgway, we spoke with each employee individually about continuing on. Clay didnโt hesitate for a second. He was deeply committed to us, and we are forever grateful. His loyalty, dedication, and heart meant everything. We are truly missing a piece of our backbone without him.
Clay leaves behind his beautiful wife, Melissaโwho is also part of our teamโtheir three children, his mother, father, brother, and extended family. We ask our community to surround Melissa and their children with love and support as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
We are heartbroken and at a loss for words. We have never lost a Bella Vino family member before, and this tragedy leaves a space that cannot be filled. Clay was more than part of our teamโhe was part of our foundation.
Forever in our hearts. We love you, Clay.
Bella Vino will be closed SundayโTuesday (May 3โ5) as our team takes time to grieve and honor our friend.
