Blast from the Past...

Babylon specializes in the Greek-style sandwich knows as a gyros, pronounced with a silent “g.”

“We often serve a gyros combined with a Greek salad, couscous and mint tea,” said owner Solomon Khdair, who recently moved to Richmond from Oshkosh, Wis., where he had a cafe.

After living in Wisconsin for nearly 20 years, Khdair said he was ready for a warmer climate.

“I also like Thoroughbred horses and thought I would enjoy living near the horse farms and race tracks of Kentucky,” he said.

“I have a friend in Louisville who said I should move to there,” Khdair said. “I visited Louisville, but didn’t like it. I liked Lexington, but costs there are high.”

Khdair settled in Richmond, he said, because it is a university town where no one was selling gyros and rents were reasonable.

“I like Richmond,” he said. “Everyone here is so nice, so friendly.”
