Tandoori chicken was popularised by Kundan Lal, he worked for Mokha Singh's small eatery at Moti Mahal in Peshawar, British India.
After the partition of India in 1947, Kundan Lal Gujral moved to Delhi with his family. Kundan Lal Gujral then started Moti Mahal, Daryaganj with another partner, Thakur Das Mago.
Indian leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Zakir Hussain among various foreign dignitaries like Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi tried tandoori chicken and loved it.
In the United States, tandoori chicken began appearing on menus by the 1960s after recipe for tandoori chicken was printed in the Los Angeles Times in 1963.
