Story time:

Some of the best ideas happen when you aren’t looking for them.

Back in January 2012, we were in the middle of remodeling what everyone thought was going to be called The Turnpike Diner. The signs hadn’t been ordered yet, and the name wasn’t set in stone.

One evening, I made a quick coffee run to Dunkin’ for the hardworking crew. Driving back down the hill on Route 9 & 20, I looked toward the city just as the setting sun dropped behind the Albany skyline.

The light was so intense it completely blinded me for a moment, but when my eyes adjusted, I couldn’t stop thinking about that view.

Right then and there, it hit me.

Skyline Diner.

That single January sunset changed the identity of this restaurant forever.

More than 14 years later, every time I see that skyline, I’m reminded how close we came to being called something else, and how one unexpected moment gave us a name that has become part of our story.

Sometimes all it takes is the right view at the right time.
