On Monday, we lost our grandmother, mother of Rafael. Gumercinda Lemus was an entrepreneur herself and lived in the same shop she used to sell goods from almost all her life. Before there were balance sheets and income statements for small businesses, there was this lady doing all the math in her head, solely based on what sounded reasonable. We can attribute a lot of our family’s success from the values, morals, dedication, and valor of this single mom.
The last time she visited us at Speedy’s in 2022, we asked her jokingly after doing a couple of tasks, “What is your pay going to be for the day?” She would lift her hand and move it back and forth by her mouth signaling the food I eat today. No words need to be spoken to understand her gesture. It was a lesson of upbringing in relation to the poverty the Lemus family was amongst at those times. The legacy of this little old lady lives through us, and our customers get to experience it every single day. Mama Gume was the catalyst for our entrepreneurial minded families and the ambition we all carry.
She will be missed but never forgotten.
La amábamos mucho y para siempre.
Que descanse en paz.
