Delia Moya Hobbs, 89, went home to be with Jesus on October 16, 2023 with heaven's angels and her children by her side. Delia was born on November 20, 1933 in Refugio to parents Christobal and Josephine Moya. She was well known locally in Refugio for the historically recognized Moya's Cafe (established in 1938) - no one passed through Refugio without eating there. She took ownership of the restaurant following her mother Josephine and devoted much of her life to serving many beloved customers over the years.

Delia was married to the love of her life, Tommy Lee Hobbs and they were blessed with four children- Sharon, Tommy (Bubba), Kathy, and Michael. Del was a devoted member of St. James Catholic Church where she played the organ for many years for church services, weddings, and funerals. She loved and enjoyed music and dancing more than anything. Music was in her veins. Delia is survived by her children: Sharon (Randall) Kowald, Kathy (Ralph) Boring, Michael Hobbs, and Thomas "Bubba" Hobbs and her grandchildren (whom she will always be known to as "Mimi"): Chris Hobbs, Erica Sitka, Tommy Hobbs, Brian Hobbs, Lisa Kennedy, Sarah Morris, Leah Canales, Chance Kowald, and Candace Hobbs, as well as her many loving great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews that she loved so very much.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Tommy, her parents Christobal and Josephine, and her sisters Tony and Petra. She will be especially remembered for her fighting spirit, her will to live, her constant prayers of strength and encouragement, and her endless love for family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Enselmo Rodriguez Jr., Chance Kowald, Tommy Hobbs, Chris Hobbs, Jimmy Kennedy, BJ Sitka. Honorary pallbearer will be Tony Rodriguez. The rosary will be held at Moore Funeral Home in Refugio, TX on Friday October 20, 2023 at 7pm. Church service will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Saturday October 21, 2023 at 10 AM.

I know many of you are aware that five months ago I suffered a car accident with major trauma. I am being restored day by day by the giver and taker of life. I still have healing in my future but I am grateful to the Lord for the progress He has helped me through. I am being referred to a specialist following my care at Brooke Army Medical Center in November. Thank you all again for every prayer and all the love and concern you have shown for me.
I have been working on resuming my normal way of life and things I enjoy. With that being said, I am ready to begin taking orders for Moya’s Hotsauce again for November through the holidays. Some of you have already reached out and I have you on my list, but if you would like to place orders and be added please let me know.

A message from our mom Sharon Kowald:

"I would like to thank so many people who have prayed for me and continued to keep me in your thoughts and prayers. The power of all prayers are heard and answered. We may not always understand why certain things happen, but prayers help us face challenges , strengthen us to fight through, and enable us to conquer and overcome our life's battles.

I have been truly blessed to have so many people reach out with concern, prayers for recovery, sending cards, showing support for me and my family, and providing the most generous medical donations to help with numerous expenses I'm facing while also out of work. I have never been so moved with the emotional support I've received during this very difficult time. God Has absolutely been with me every step and placed all of you in my life to be there for me as well.

Each day is another day of gaining strength and moving towards healing. Thank you all again for every kind, generous, loving, supportive action each of you have shown me. Your prayers and love have helped me to get through this. God bless you all - and may He do for you what He has done for me. I may not have a way to contact each of you to thank you personally for the medical donations, but I will do my very best to try and reach out. Please know that they were received and every one is absolutely acknowledged and appreciated more than you could ever know.

Love you all,
Sharon and family "

here's a mom update: Sharon Kowald was discharged from Brooke Army Medical Center on May 25 and came to stay with us at our home (her daughter Leah and my family) in San Antonio for home health therapy and to attend ongoing follow-up appointments with her doctors until she is more in the clear on her healing time frame. Her brain hemorrhaging is expected to take 1-2 months to hopefully self-heal. She is able to walk assisted with a walker and has been very determined and impressed all the therapists and nurses since being in the hospital. This is due to limitations with her vision which I'll explain below, otherwise we know she'd be okay to walk without it but needs it to assist for now. We received good news that she won't be needing the speech therapy after being evaluated for that today.

I took her to a 2 week post surgery follow up appointment last week at BAMC and we met with the ENT team who took care of her as well as the Opthamology team. Their current main concern is that her right eye is sitting higher than her left causing some blurry/double vision issues. It's actually affecting both eyes being out of alignment and she needs to close one to try to see anything clearly. They both seem to work well individually which is good. Her body is adapting and using coping mechanisms and trying to ignore her left eye and use her right one dominantly. They aren't sure yet if this is due to post surgery swelling in that eye (they did facial reconstruction surgery and made a lower eyelid incision to push plates into her face and also repaired her right eye socket - so this is still healing and a possibility) or if the plates themselves are causing the issue. They ordered for a CT scan next week just to try and see what those titanium plates that they put into her face are doing and making sure they aren't causing any issues. So she is limited on her ability to see well right now, but we are staying positive and giving that eye the time it needs to heal. If other options are needed to correct in the future then we will deal with that then. They started her on steroids this week to try and aid with that healing process in her eye.

She is still pretty bruised all over - especially her arms and hands and needs to work with an OT to regain strength. She has some head pain/headaches right near her eye socket that they did surgery on. She has quite a bit of mouth pain due to the facial reconstruction surgery incision they did through her mouth as well as putting brackets into her gums (hopefully temporary for 6-8 weeks depending on how her facial reconstruction fractures heal) so she is unable to chew and still on puree diet with sinus restrictions. Don't worry I swear I'm feeding her well and have gotten very creative with figuring out how to do absolutely everything in a Ninja (breakfast, steak, chicken and dumplings, taco salad, beef tips with mushrooms rice and gravy, spaghetti made the way she likes, sweet potatoes, veggies, literally everything i can think of. I even pureed her the KFC she was craving including the biscuits - and olive garden shrimp fettuccine including the breadsticks. I can literally make anything happen in a ninja at this point, it's like an interesting challenge).

Every day we still see a little improvement with her and she is the world's best most non-complaining patient. I wouldn't want to take care of anyone else. Her attitude has remained positive even on the hard days and I truly believe she will be back to feeding her chickens and gathering eggs and even driving again - all in due time. Her body just needs time to recover, rest, and heal. Please continue to pray about her eyes healing the way they need to. Thank you again for all continuing to pray for her road to recovery. She is very aware and very appreciative and grateful beyond words and so are we. She loves you all and thanks you so much.

UPDATE: facial reconstruction surgery went well. It was more extensive than the surgeon planned, but they were able to place titanium plates over most of the fractures (6 total) and screwed some metal plates into her mouth to help keep the bones in her face aligned and screwed her eye socket bones back together on her right eye. she has several incisions for all of the work and was already in an intense amount of pain with so much bruising and swelling - so this was a major setback because it's now causing more, but in the long run is putting her on the path to healing. what we need for her is so much healing and for God to just wrap her in His healing arms and comfort her pain and give her strength. thank you to each of you for every thought and prayer and loving her so much.

mom was taken back for facial reconstruction surgery at 7:30AM - we don't have any updates at the moment until we hear from her surgeons. we truly appreciate you lifting her up in prayer during her surgery today. she has le fort type 2 fractures on both sides of her face as well as her eye socket so she's been in an incredible amount of pain and extremely bruised and swollen and we need to get her to a point of starting that healing process although it will be a rough road. her brain hemorrhaging is still stabile, but they explained that the breaks basically leave her spinal fluid at risk for seeping from sinuses as well as risk of her brain dropping so they needed to be fixed immediately. thank you again for all of the love and prayers you are sending her (and our) way. and thank you with all of our hearts to each of you helping donate towards making sure her bills stay paid. you are all her angels for helping keep her and my dad taken care of during this time.

our mama Sharon Kowald can feel every prayer you are sending her way, and although she can't really open her eyes well - i see a tear come down her face every time i tell her someone is praying for her and wants me to tell her you love her. she can feel all of the love and every prayer. thank you beyond all words. please keep them coming as she's scheduled for facial reconstruction surgery on Monday. her brain hemorrhaging is stabile - not worse, not better so in trauma they let it be (no surgery planned for that) so long as it continues to stay stabile and not worsen. still at risk for seizure due to the brain bleeding and swelling. we are just continually thanking Jesus that she is here and alive and responsive.

i'm only including her info below for those who have asked. please know that my mama is the hardest working most selfless person to ever exist and would never ask for help from a soul, but some of you have asked me if you can help her and it's easier for me to put it here than individually reply. mom was the only one working because my dad is suffering with his health as well so anything at this point would truly bless her while she is trying to recover from this trauma. i keep telling her to please not worry and that everything will be taken care of for her because she's the one that always takes care of everything and everyone and that God is going to provide a way for her through this and i truly believe that. thank you with all of our hearts for helping to make sure she and our dad are taken care of.

please, please keep praying. please. and thank you so much. none of us were in the position to discuss at all yesterday and we are all just desperate for prayers for her. i know word gets around quickly in a small town and we are all getting so many messages and calls for her that we can't keep up - so to briefly let those of you know who are praying, my mom Sharon Kowald was in a bad accident yesterday while delivering food for a funeral and was halo flighted to San Antonio currently in ICU with brain hemorrhaging on both sides as well as many facial fractures, eye socket fracture, blood vomiting, lots of swelling, bruising, cuts, scrapes, and just generally very bad beat up condition. we are just asking for your continued prayers for her, please please. she is surrounded by family and knows everyone is praying for her and loves her. thank you to those of you worried and checking on her. we'll do our best to keep updated but please be patient with us - no one has slept at all and we are focused solely on being by her side.

also i am trying to handle any paid/pending Moya's Cafe orders that i'm aware of her having booked for this month in the best way that i can. i don't have her planner so please reach out to me if you have one in place and need to reschedule for sometime in the future or be refunded. i am limited in what i can do at this point so please be understanding and patient and thanks so much. if it's not for this month then we don't need to address that at the moment.

UPDATE: i apologize for lack of updates i know so many of you are concerned. my sister and i have been pretty much living at the hospital with her (i think we're on day 12 now) and going home late at night to little ones who really miss their mama and memaw so it's been extremely tough. with trauma mom just really needs time. time for healing, rest, amd working on regaining strength with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and even speech therapy for brain - so some days have been really hard and some we see a little progress forward. the surgery was definitely a setback so it's been rough especially with her inability to chew food and pain, but she is now moving forward in the healing of all the damage to the bones in her face/eye and the brain hemorrhaging is supposed to heal with time. she isn't up for any phonecalls - lots of pain everywhere including her mouth and not up to talking about it, but we are making sure she knows that everyone is thinking of and praying for her. you may send her a text if you'd like. we are so thankful to every one of you. our plans are to try to move her to an in patient rehabilitation center here once she is ever released from brooke army medical center. thank you for continuing to cover her in your prayers.
