Old Fashioned Community Hymn Sing

Old Fashioned Community Hymn Sing The Palm Village chapel hosts a hymn sing for the public on the last Sunday of each quarter (Mar, Ju Everyone in the Reedley area is welcome to attend!

Inspired by Chaplain Ray O'Neill, the Old Fashioned Community Hymn Sing was launched March 16, 2014. The event is held on the third Sunday of each month in the evening from 6:00 to 7:15 PM in the Chapel at Palm Village Retirement Community in Reedley, CA. Each month, the program is set around a theme. The program begins with 15 minutes of piano and organ music and a slide show to inspire the audie

nce with the spirit of the theme for the program. The first half of the program includes pre-planned songs while the second half of the program is opened up to songs by audience requests. In addition to the songs sung by the audience, a special guest is usually included who sings a song or two, a guest speaker gives a short message, a short story about the origin of a hymn is told then sung, and the program is opened and closed in prayer. The program is planned and performed to honor the Holy Spirit of God. After the program, all are welcome to mingle and fellowship with refreshments at Barbara's Cafe. The hymn books used were published in 1971 by the General Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Churches, Library of Congress catalog card number 74-152488. They are no longer available.

It's been a year since the Covid pandemic forced us to cancel our regular Hymn Sing programs. During that time, several of our key musicians and others have become unavailable, not due to Covid, but to the loss of hearing, eyesight and other natural conditions of aging. In the meantime, others are moving into our Palm Village Retirement Community who have similar skills and are willing to use them for God's glory.

Recently, restrictions are being slowly loosened and we are considering the possibility of resuming the Hymn Sing programs eventually.

During this same time, our weekly chapel programs on Thursday evenings were also halted due to Covid. Those were not live-streamed in the past, but were only live-audience meetings. We have received permission to resume those with limited attendance, distance and masks. We are holding our first weekly chapel meeting tomorrow evening. Praise the Lord!

Please keep us in your prayers as we work through technical details and begin to provide the service to our residents once again. Our Chaplain Byron has been instrumental in developing alternative ways of ministering to our residents throughout this time in the absence of in-person congregational meetings, using technology and old Hymn Sing videos combined with PowerPoint to broadcast programs on the campus TV system for the residents. This has been a burden on his heart as he desires to bring God's encouragement and peace to all the residents and staff at Palm Village.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rules against gatherings imposed by governing bodies, our scheduled Hymn Sing program for late March was canceled. Provided the restrictions against gatherings are lifted in time, we hope to have our next regularly scheduled Hymn Sing on June 28. We will update this post as we learn more. The 4th quarter Hymn Sing "Vision 2020" is tomorrow evening, on New Year's Eve! We will usher out the year and prepare for a new year, 2020, with musical praise to Jesus Christ, our Savior and God. See you at 6:30 live!

For those who can join us in person, we will enjoy a feast afterward as we fellowship together. A highlight are home-baked new years fritters (deep fried dough with raisins and coated with sugar), a Mennonite tradition which we always look forward to in addition to many other items and drinks like hot chocolate and hot apple cider.

The Hymn Sing will continue, but on a quarterly basis instead of monthly. It will now be held the last Sunday of each quarter (March 31, June 30, September 29) and on New Year's Eve for the 4th quarter. The time is also being changed to 6:30 PM to fit the Palm Village residents schedule better.

The next Hymn Sing is March 31 and the theme will be "Calvary Love" as it will be in the midst of the Lent season. Hoping all our fans will join us again then. We will post a reminder here as well.
