Today is Saturday, June 13th, and we have lots to be thankful for and to celebrate today!
First of all, thank you for all your support! Last Friday was National Donut Day, and you helped us break our personal record for best sales day since purchasing Doughboys 2 years ago!
We not only had a lot of support from you (the community and our very loyal customers ❤️), but also from various organizations who helped to make the day even more special! National WWI Museum and Memorial , Heartland Women Veterans American Legion Post 1107 , and The Salvation Army in Kansas and The Salvation Army in Kansas & Western Missouri all came together to share in the story of the creation of National Donut Day. The World War I donuts made in-house were pretty fun to experience!
Today is Day 7 of Ray-staurant Week and we are honored to have been asked by the Raytown Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and Building Foundation to be this morning's featured restaurant! Our special is a dozen raised glazed donuts for $13.99, which is almost a dollar off! We are open until 2pm, so there's still time to come by!
Lastly, today is our nephew's 20th birthday, and many of you have seen him working the front counter on the weekends. Please wish him a very happy birthday today!

What is National Donut Day?

It was established in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor the women who served donuts to American soldiers during World War I and to raise funds during the Great Depression.
Female volunteers from the Salvation Army traveled to France to support American troops. These women operated small service huts near the front lines, providing baked goods, coffee, and comforts to soldiers who were often far from home. Due to limited kitchen facilities at the front, volunteers Margaret Sheldon and Helen Purviance devised a way to fry donuts, often using soldiers’ helmets as frying pans.
The donuts became immensely popular among troops, boosting morale and providing a symbolic taste of home. Over time, the volunteers earned the affectionate nickname "Donut Girls" or "Doughnut Lassies"
The first National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago in 1938. The Salvation Army created the holiday both to honor the wartime contributions of the Doughnut Lassies and to raise funds for those struggling during the Great Depression.
The event gradually grew in popularity, spreading beyond Chicago and eventually becoming a nationwide annual observance on the first Friday of June.
Today, National Donut Day continues to celebrate both the beloved pastry and the charitable spirit that inspired the holiday. Many donut shops offer free donuts or special promotions to mark the occasion.
Beyond free treats, the day also serves as an opportunity to support community causes and participate in charitable activities, reflecting the original intent of the Salvation Army fundraiser.
While the day primarily honors the donuts themselves, it also commemorates acts of kindness and morale-boosting service during difficult times, turning a simple treat into a symbol of comfort, community, and generosity.
In summary, National Donut Day is both a fun food holiday and a historical tribute to the women volunteers of the Salvation Army who made a meaningful contribution to the welfare of soldiers during World War I, later inspiring a tradition that blends celebration with philanthropy. What a great Memorial Day weekend! The weather has been beautiful, everybody is smiling and happy, the Bruders were here with their musical talent yesterday, we're open until 2pm today, and there's still another day to be with family and friends.
Our tradition on Memorial Day has been to get together with family, take flowers to the gravesides of those who have passed on, and spend time reminiscing about them with each other.
What's your traditional Memorial Day look like?
