One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is how easy it is to get caught up in competition when you’re building a business.

Especially in food, events, catering, charcuterie — there are a lot of talented people trying to build something of their own. Everyone is working toward their own version of success, trying to stand out, book the next event, grow their following, and create something people remember.

But I don’t think someone else succeeding means there’s less room for us.

There’s room around the table....

Not everyone is going to have the same style, the same customers, the same ideas, or even the same definition of success — and that’s a good thing.

The more we build Board & Butcher, the more we realize we don’t want to spend energy trying to be everything to everyone or constantly looking at what the next person is doing.

We want to build around people who see our values and the kind of business we actually want to have.

We want to work with people who value quality and creativity. People who understand that food can be part of the experience, not just something sitting on a table. We want to create things that feel thoughtful and beautiful without losing the personal side of why we started doing this in the first place.

And we want to surround ourselves with people whose morals, energy and philosophies feel right.

Because who you build alongside matters just as much as what you build.

There will always be competition. There will always be someone doing something similar, someone further ahead, someone with a different idea, or someone reaching for the same opportunity.

But there is also room to support each other, refer business, collaborate, learn from one another and still create your own lane.

Success doesn’t have to come from pushing someone else out of the way.

Sometimes it comes from simply knowing who you are, what you stand for, and who you want sitting at your table.

And if the table gets a little bigger along the way?

Even better.

There’s room around the table — just make sure you’re filling it with the right people.
