Trail report as of March 27th ❄️
Snow and cold temperatures have returned on the mountain, with a fresh blanket of white! Although the snowpack is much reduced, trails at higher elevations have deep, fresh snow that necessitates the use of snowshoes. Be prepared for variable conditions and potentially difficult stream crossings if you are hiking this weekend. Lowe’s Path is especially treacherous at the moment with snow covering hard ice flows.

The Mount Washington Observatory has issued a wind chill advisory in effect from 5pm Friday through 9am Sunday.

The Gray K**b snowstake is at 14”. The snowpack is deeper in places, especially sheltered areas in the trees.

Trail report as of March 4th 🫠🧊❄️
The recent extended warmup has significantly reduced snowpack on the mountain and created variable conditions at all elevations. Temperatures have fallen back below freezing and firmed up remaining snow. Well-traveled trails have a monorail of hard-packed snow and may have large ice flows as runoff has frozen. Above treeline conditions currently consist of bare rock, ice, and firm snow.

The Mount Washington Observatory has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 11pm tonight to 2pm Saturday. Heavy snow and high winds are forecasted for tonight, which will significantly alter conditions.

Those hiking this weekend should be prepared for variable trail conditions and potentially difficult stream crossings. Hikers should be prepared with traction such as microspikes or crampons and snowshoes, especially with incoming snowfall.

The Gray K**b snowstake has fallen to 16 inches.

Trail report as of February 27th ❄️
Greetings from two of the most frequent visitors at Gray K**b, the Pine Marten and Gray Jays! Not much new to report on the RMC trails. Snow has continued to accumulate and drift, piling up deeply at the camps. There is deep unconsolidated snow at all elevations and snowshoes are recommended for anyone hitting the trails this weekend. Some of the more popular trails, such as Amphibrach and Lowe’s, have a packed base with a layer of fresh snow. Please consider wearing snowshoes even if you are not sinking deeply to keep the trail well-packed for others following after you.

Winds will increase tomorrow and temperatures will fall on Sunday. The Mount Washington Observatory has issued a wind chill advisory in effect from 6 pm Sunday through 3 am Tuesday. Be sure to check the Higher Summits Forecast for an up to date forecast before heading out.

The Gray K**b snowstake is at 45 inches. The snowstake was as high as 48 earlier this week, but fresh snow has continued to blow off with high winds.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the Randolph Mountain Club! Snow has continued to accumulate at all elevations, making for a wonderful mid-winter atmosphere on the mountain! Those planning to hike in the Northern Presidentials over the next week should be prepared with snowshoes for deep, unconsolidated snow conditions. The main routes to the camps (Lowe’s Path and Amphibrach/Spur/Hincks) have seen some traffic, but trails remain soft and unpacked.

The Mount Washington Observatory has issued a wind chill advisory, in effect until 10am Sunday.

The Gray K**b snow stake is at 47 inches, with deeper drifts in places.

Trail Report as of February 6th ❄️

Happy Friday from the Randolph Mountain Club! Colder temperatures heading into this weekend along with plenty of fresh snowfall last week have left the trails of the Northern Presidentials blanketed in fresh, deep, and pristine snow, with only a few major routes being packed down enough for easier travel. Much of the snow we’ve received recently has also been affected by heavy winds across the higher summits, creating dense snowdrifts and variable conditions on unbroken trails. Some popular routes such as Amphibrach, lower Spur, & Hincks are broken out, but still require snowshoes as the snow remains unconsolidated. Many trails are deeply drifted with unconsolidated snow and travel will be exceedingly difficult without snowshoes or skis.

Snow showers across the Presidentials throughout this week have left the snow stake at Gray K**b reading 41 inches, with even deeper drifts in sheltered areas! We’re expecting as much as a few more inches of snow this weekend, along with another significant cold snap Saturday into Sunday. Please bundle up if you’re planning to head out this weekend, and make sure you have the proper equipment for enjoying all this wonderful fresh snow safely!
