Did you know? Earth Day was started in 1970 by Senator Nelson, who was inspired by the student anti-war movement and rising environmental damage (like the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill). He sought to put environmental issues on the national political agenda.
Today, it serves as a reminder to protect the planet - encouraging actions like recycling, reducing waste, planting trees, and cleaning up communities. It's a reminder to push for sustainable policies, fight climate change, and protect the Earth's natural resources for future generations.
Chef Nelson does his part at home with a massive garden spanning most of his backyard. The garden has been a great way for him to connect with his four kids, parents, and neighbors. Currently in the Nelson Family Garden we have peaches, 2 types of apples, plums, figs, 3 types of tomotoes, 3 types of peppers, watermelon, canatlope, zucchini, yellow squash, green beans, edemame, brussel sprouts, swiss char, orka, sunflowers, as well as an extensive herb garden. We purchase all our heirloom seeds from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and our trees from Arbor Day Foundation. We highly recommend both of these organizations!
