I want to sincerely apologize to everyone who was blindsided by the way my café closed two years ago. I know how sudden and confusing it was, especially for a place that had become such a loved part of our community. M
The truth is, the circumstances surrounding the closure were never what I intended, and ultimately, they were not within my control. At the time, I was struggling financially while also going through some of the most difficult personal circumstances of my life, including the loss of a pregnancy and the breakdown of my marriage. I was very open with my landlord about my financial struggles and went to her several times asking whether I should close the café or walk away. Each time, I was reassured that I should keep going, that I could pay what I was able to pay at the time, and that she did not want to see the café close because of how much the community loved it. I genuinely believed I had her support and believed I was doing everything I could to keep the doors open.
What I never anticipated was that, while I was already dealing with so much personally, 2 members of my ex-husbands family would approach my landlord about taking over the café, assuming they could take over the business immediately. I was completely blindsided when, while the café was still operating, a sign was placed on the door stating that I had been evicted and that no one could enter. There was no opportunity for me to prepare, explain the situation to my customers, or properly say goodbye to the people who had supported me. Whatever the legal circumstances may have been, the way it happened was devastating and left me with no chance to control how my business ended.
It was especially painful to watch people attempt to take advantage of a business I had built during one of the lowest points of my life. Eventually, their attempt to continue the business did not succeed either, and the café ultimately closed for good.
I will always be grateful for the people who supported that café and for the memories we created there. I am truly sorry that I never got the chance to close those doors on my own terms, to thank everyone properly, or to give the community the goodbye it deserved. Please know that I did not willingly walk away from something I loved or from the people who loved it. I was going through an incredibly painful chapter of my life, and the way everything unfolded was something I never saw coming. I will always carry the love and support this community gave me, and I hope that, knowing the truth, you can understand that the ending was never the ending I chose.
EDITED TO ADD: I do want to clarify one topic: there were people in my ex-husbands family that played a role in this. I am in no way trying to hurt anyone’s feelings and want to say that if you are familiar with that family, A LOT of them have been very kind to me over the years. I do not have anything bad to say about anyone. I will forever be grateful to the members of that family that showed me kindness and support over the years.
