: Our new social media series for the celebration features the work of artists who have been inspired by pivotal moments from December 25, 1776 to January 3, 1777.

Alonzo Chappel’s "George Washington at the Battle of Princeton" (1857) captures the General leading a vigorous counterattack and rallying the Continental army against British forces. Washington reportedly inspired the troops by shouting, "Parade with us my brave fellows! There is but a handful of the enemy and we shall have them directly!" One of the artist's best known oil paintings, it was widely reproduced as an engraving.

Schätze der deutschen Kultur zum Advent - Folge 5

HANS MEMLING: DREIKÖNIGSALTAR (um 1475)

Reiche "Könige" fallen nieder vor einem Kind? Die drei Weisen aus dem Morgenland treten ein in den Stall von Betlehem, um das Christuskind zu verehren. Der Stall erscheint als Mischung aus perspektivisch gestalteter steinerner Renaissancearchitektur und hölzernen Elementen. Das ist zeittypisch für die Stall-Darstellungen der Renaissance, der der gebürtige Hesse Memling zuzurechnen ist. Aufgewachsen in der Einhard-Stadt Seligenstadt zog es ihn in die Niederlande, wo er als Schüler Rogier van der Weydens den Übergang von der Spätgotik zur Renaissance mitprägte. Das Triptychon zeigt neben der Anbetung der Könige (Mitte) links die Geburt Christi und rechts die Darbringung im Tempel. Als wiederkehrendes Motiv in der Geschichte der sakralen Kunst hatte sich die Anbetung der Könige 1475 längst etabliert: Dass vor der erlösenden Gnade Christi neben der armen Hirten auch die Reichen Sterndeuter aus dem Morgenland niederfallen, bewegt die Welt seit über 2000 Jahren.

Japan has a Catholic princess: Princess Nobuko of Mikasa, a notable figure within the Imperial House.

Born into a Catholic family and baptized as a child, she brought this heritage into the bosom of the Japanese monarchy upon marrying, in 1980, Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, with whom she had two daughters.

Throughout her public trajectory, she distinguished herself through dedicated work in social and health institutions, among them the Japanese Red Cross, establishing herself as a discreet yet striking presence in the country's public life.
