Dark Horse will be staying open a little later next Wednesday, September 16, in hopes of seeing the drag racers drive by on their way to St. Louis. (See post we shared) Hours will be 5:30 am until 3 pm. We will also be having a special energy drink called "The Dragster" in honor of the racers. (watermelon, blue raspberry and green apple) We hope to see you!
This is pretty cool and I figured our little town might enjoy knowing what’s headed our way!
For anyone who isn’t familiar with Hot Rod Drag Week, it’s the drag-and-drive competition Dean and I usually participate in. Racers compete at a different drag strip each day, but here’s the catch — they have to drive their race cars from track to track. No support vehicles following them. If something breaks along the way, they fix it themselves and keep going. Five days, hundreds of miles and five days of racing. 🏁
Each year there are around 300 cars participating, and on Wednesday, September 16, they race at Cordova Dragway before heading toward St. Louis for the next day of competition.
And their official route takes them right through Viola on US-67!
Cars will be leaving Cordova throughout the day, so they won’t all come through at once, but I would expect a pretty steady stream with a good portion likely coming through early to mid-afternoon.
These aren’t just everyday cars either. You’ll see everything from classic hot rods and street cars to some seriously fast race cars — all driving down the highway under their own power.
If you’re around Wednesday, grab a chair, bring the kids out and find a safe spot along the route to wave, cheer, honk and give them a little Viola welcome as they make their way toward St. Louis!
Dean and I know firsthand how much fun it is when you come through a small town during one of these events and people are standing along the road cheering you on. ❤️🏁
Wednesday, September 16 • US-67 through Viola • Keep an eye out throughout the afternoon!
