Mysterious Billy Smith boxed in the basement of the Kenton hotel during prohibition years !

"Mysterious" Billy Smith, 1890s and early 1900s welterweight champion, was born William Amos Smith in Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1871.

Smith is also known as one of the dirtiest fighters of all time. He was a puncher, but he was disqualified about 10 times during his career for fouls ranging from biting, throwing, punching a down opponent and kneeing. Smith nonetheless defeated a number of top fighters during his career, like Joe Walcott, Kid Lavigne, Matty Matthews, Shadow Maber, Young Peter Jackson and Danny Needham.

After a 25-year career, Smith retired at 35-21-26 with 24 KO, and about a dozen No Contest or No Decision bouts and several exhibitions.
