This book “Plants Have So Much to Give Us, All We Have to do is Ask” Anishinaabe Botanical Teachings by Wendy Makoons Geniusz and Illustrated by Annemarie Geniusz was suggested by one of my mentors Elder Daisy Kostus of Waswanipi Cree First Nations. Daisy is also an honored Grandmother of the Saginaw/Chippewa Tribe of the Potawatomi. She is also a revered teacher at the Saginaw Tribal College and this is one of the books she uses to teach traditional medicine and herbology . I am very lucky and honored that she shared this. I am very excited to learn.

If you haven’t read the book “Ultra Processed People” by Chris Van Tulleken it is an absolute must read.

I’ve suspected for decades that there was something wrong with our food system, and how humans were processing calories and I attributed a great deal of it to the lack of nutrients due to devastated soil.

This book goes so far beyond explaining how that is just the tip of the iceberg. The modern food system has taken what were previously inedible byproducts and turned them into UPF or Ultra Processed Foods.

In one case, even using the byproduct of coal converted into what was marketed as a butter substitute. NO KIDDING. Coal Butter

Let that sink in

There are some ingredients that are fairly innocuous. However, the majority of Americans and Canadians are not eating small amounts of these non-food foods. We’re feeding it to our babies, growing children, whose brains are developing until they’re 25 and then wondering why there’s this plethora of allergies, food related illnesses, and diet related death.

Read your labels folks. If you can’t pronounce it chances are you shouldn’t be putting it in your body.

One of the things that the author points out is that he is supported by the BBC and propaganda free research and states unapologetically that without their non-partisan support we would never know about the majority of this information.

You should walk, no run to your local library or bookstore and read this book from front to back it is a life-changing read. If it isn’t then keep on eating whatever you’re willing to let them feed you.

Seen here is my breakfast this morning Steel cut oats with pecans, mulberries harvested from my own tree and honey from a local beekeeper. That’s what’s for breakfast.
