YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF OLD
FITZGERALD BOTTLED-IN-BOND,
BUT WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT
THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL?
As a U.S. Treasury Agent who guarded the bonded rickhouses where whiskey is stored and aged, John E. Fitzgerald had access to some of the best Bourbon.
Seizing his opportunity, he used his keys to let himself in and thieve a few sips after nightfall.
When it came time to dump the barrels, some were found to be unusually light—and exceptionally smooth. These became known as ‘Fitzgerald Barrels,’ and were later bottled and sold as Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond.
FUN FACT: Have you ever wondered what “Bottled in Bond” means?
The simple answer is that the whiskey must be aged at least 4 years in a federally bonded warehouse, Bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV), Made by one distiller at one distillery, and be made in a single distilling season (January–June or July–December)
The label must identify the distillery where the whiskey was produced and bottled. If any of these requirements aren’t met, the whiskey can’t legally be called Bottled in Bond.
