There's a part of your job you quietly work around and hope nobody notices.

Last week, August 6th and 7th, we took a test called Working Genius. It sorts out three things: what you're naturally good at, what you can get through, and what drains you every time.

Efraim, our Operator, paid for all eleven of us. Every Director was out of the restaurant and in the same room for two days.

Most places would stop at the first list — the things you're naturally good at. Efraim went to the third one. The things that drain you.

Why? Because you lead best when you lead as yourself. And to lead as yourself, you first have to understand who you are and how you're wired.

That's hard to do when you're working around the things that empty you out and hoping nobody notices. Not on purpose. You just don't have a clear picture of how you're built yet.

Here's what changes when everybody has that picture. The thing that drains me is the very thing someone else might love doing. So instead of forcing it and pushing through alone, I go ask them. That can only happen when we all have that clarity about how each of us is wired.

On day two, Efraim, Steve, and I stayed as the executive team for a second day.

Cow Appreciation Day is one of the biggest days of the year for Chick-fil-A. Guests come in dressed in cow spots and get a free entrée, and we decorate the whole store for it.

For most of the leaders in our room, this was their first one. None of them had ever worked one, and in a few days they would be the ones running it.

So we spent the day before getting ready. Valentina, one of our Directors, made every single leader their own kit — a cup with their name written on it, a cow face mask, cow print socks, cow print hair ties. One for each person, ready before they walked in.

Steve, our General Manager, ran a speed of service contest between the shifts to see who could get orders out fastest. He picked the prize himself: the winning shift got to put a pie in his face and pour a bucket of ice water over his head.

We also kept a tradition we run every quarter.

The team votes on the person who best lived out one of our core values, and that person signs the giant letter that stands for that value. The letters are covered in names and dates going back years, and once your name is on one, it stays.

Then we set one focus for the next three months: create unforgettable memories.

Four of these you feel. One of them you can measure.

Two folds, half an inch each. That's how we close a sandwich bag here. As our guest, you'll never look at the top of that bag and think about it. But you'd feel it if we stopped.

That's the part I want people to understand about being on our team. The mat, the cherry, the bathroom, the fold — none of it shows up on a report. Nobody gets a score at the end of the week for a clean half-inch. You do it because someone is about to carry that bag out to their car, or eat it on a work break, or sit down in our dining room with it. It's a work of your hands. You're signing your name on what you do.

The fourth one is the hardest to teach and the easiest to notice. Someone walks in and the room is better. There's no way to measure that. You just know it happened, and you know when it didn't.

We exist to change lives by creating unforgettable memories for every team member and every guest.

It’s a great summer day at Chick-fil-A ☀️

Two labs in the back seat, waiting on whipped cream. That's how July started.

Then a family who brings their own cards and turns our long table into game night.

Then July 14 — Cow Appreciation Day. Cow spots everywhere. Masks on the little ones and the grown-ups. Friends lined up all day to take pictures at the balloon arch.

None of that was an accident.

Our leaders met the Sunday before and picked the focus for the quarter: create unforgettable memories. Then July happened.

Some of July happened somewhere else. Efraim and Yareli went to see Cynthia, the Operator at Chick-fil-A Hialeah Westland — learning from each other and leaning on each other. Same purpose. Different building.

None of this shows up in a sales report. All of it is the work.

Most people think the job is the number. Hit it, you win. I've never run it that way.

The number matters — of course it matters. But it's a means, not the end. The end is the purpose. A leader who lives it when nobody's watching is worth more to me than one who just clears the bar.

My dad taught me to raise up your own people — to take the time to build them, to develop them. My old boss taught me how to handle the hard moments, when someone breaks your trust. I've had great mentors, and everything I know they modeled first.

I've never met someone who wasn't carrying something around.

A degree they stopped halfway through.

A business they only think about on the drive home.

A version of their life they've been waiting for a better season to go get. Most people walk into a job assuming that thing goes in a drawer until they leave.

I don't run it that way. Whatever you're trying to build, it isn't a distraction from the work here.

I think we can actually amplify people's dreams and help them become a reality. That's not a perk we offer. It's the reason I’m intentionally building our Chick-fil-A in the way I built it. It's the reason I'm building this restaurant the way I am.

You met Josiah earlier this week. The 17-year-old who applied to be a Director here and got told no.

Here's what he did with the six months after that.

I ask every Team Member the same question. What are you into. What are you studying. What do you want to get good at. Then it's on us to find something real in this building that fits the answer.

Josiah said finance. So we gave him the books for our sister store, Chick-fil-A Deerfield Beach.

He pays the bills. He deals with the vendors. He questions invoices nobody asked him to look at twice. He calls and works out better prices. None of that money is his, and he guards it like it is.

We taught him the systems. The care came with him.

Initiative is expected. Feedback is a gift. Everyone gets better every day.

We didn't promote Jerrod so he could grow into the role. He was already in it.

Jerrod is one of the rare ones. Before there was an official promotion — before there were even signs of one — he was already doing the work of the role he wanted to grow into.

Most places do it the other way around. Hand someone the title first and hope the person catches up to it. We got to watch Jerrod do it quietly, on his own, without an audience.

Nobody told him to lead the Q2 presentation. He stood up in front of the room and gave the report — six Team Leaders promoted, four more in training, eight Managers certified.

Those aren't his personal numbers. They're the leaders this organization built in a single quarter, and that's the real measure of a Director here. Not the work you get done yourself. How many leaders you grew.

Initiative is expected. Feedback is a gift. Everyone gets better every day. Jerrod was living all three long before any of it showed up on a nametag.

So today we get to come together as a Pompano Beach team and make it official.

Congratulations, Jerrod. We're honored to have you on this journey.
