Dear Plain Folk Friends, Family, and Neighbors,
There are some messages that are incredibly difficult to write, and this is one of them.
For many years, serving this community has been more than a business—it has been our passion, our purpose, and truly a way of life.
Many of you first came to know us through the Plain Folk Cafe, where we were honored to serve our community for ten wonderful years. During those years, so many of you became more than customers—you became friends, and those relationships have meant more to us than we can say.
When the opportunity came for us to purchase the General Store, we felt it was a privilege to become the caretakers of a business that has been an integral part of the fabric of this community since 1899. The outpouring of love and support we have received has been humbling to say the least!
It is with heavy hearts that we share that the time has come for us to move on. Our hope is to find the next generation of caretakers who will continue the General Store’s long tradition of serving this community.
Some recent health developments are affecting both of us and will make it too difficult for us to give the business the time and energy it requires to continue to be successful. These circumstances, along with the fact that we have children and grandchildren spread across four different states, have made us realize that we need to focus on the things that are most important to us: health and family.
As a result, the business and property will be placed on the market for sale as of September 1, 2026, in the hope that we are able to find someone else to “pick up where we left off.”
While our greatest hope is to find the right person to carry the General Store forward, if a buyer is not found, we plan to close the store at the end of the year, with our last day of business being December 31, 2026. Until either a new owner takes over or that day arrives, it will be business as usual at the General Store!
So, once again, we want to thank you in advance for your continued support as we work through this process. It is with bittersweet excitement that we look forward to the next chapter of our lives, and we will never forget those of you who have supported us along the way.
With love and gratitude,
John & Vicky Baker
