Friends, neighbors, customers, customers who have become lifelong friends and lovers of a good egg sandwich. This one is for you and anyone that has touched our lives in the past 6 years. ⠀

We’ve spent the last few months finding our way, digging deep and reflecting on what makes our lives and hearts full. ⠀
• ⠀
It is bittersweet for us to share that we are closing Pear and the Pickle, permanently. The romance we once had with cooking and owning a small business has faded away. Mentally, we are much healthier and happier. And, that right there is why we we have made this decision. Life is too short to continue doing something that doesn’t bring joy. To put it simply—it’s not you, it’s us.⠀

Thank you for your love, friendship and for the endless support. The evolution of 1800 Rialto is in the works and we are hopeful that it will continue to nourish and enrich the Troy Hill community. 🤍

We’ve been operating under very challenging (and completely abnormal) circumstances for nearly two years. And to be honest, we just don’t feel like our customers are getting the best version of PnP right now. ⠀
⠀
Pivoting our business model again and again, food cost fluctuations, labor strains, rising costs, safety guidelines, and on and on…we’re exhausted. Physically, emotionally, mentally. ⠀
⠀
Thank you for your patience as we take a minute to catch our breath, spend more time with our kids and figure out our next step. ❤️

Super bummed to report that do to the 685th water main break in the last 5 years we will be CLOSED on Saturday, October 23 // This one really stings especially because it’s our busiest day of the week. Pittsburgh infrastructure is failing and while it’s inconvenient for residents it causes tens (hundreds? millions?) of thousands in lost revenue for businesses and lost wages for staff. Hopefully Gainey for Mayor has a plan! // cc: Councilman Bobby Wilson

Come on in, we’re open! Dudes, dudettes, el duderinos it’s been more than 16 months since we’ve opened our doors and served you all from our little cafe. We’re nervous, scared, and excited. Our friend Andrew even dressed up the espresso machine for the occasion! // We hope to see lots of you from 9AM - 2PM today. 🍳🥪🥓🥯⠀

Everyone’s safety is still really important to us. So please wear your mask if you’re unvaccinated and we strongly encourage everyone to wear one when moving around the cafe.⠀

This is our amazing full-time crew. They work incredibly hard. And, until today, a portion of their wages was dependent on the gratuity customers add on to each check. This past year has been especially challenging for restaurants and the service industry. Many have been asked to put their own well-being at risk to serve others—with not a whole lot of gratitude from the public. As restaurant owners, this does not make us feel good. Our margins are slim, yet we want to pay our experienced and highly-skilled staff a living wage.⠀
• ⠀
We’ve reflected on the antiquated practice of tipping and its troubling, classist and racist history. We’ve taken inspiration from other restaurants, we’ve crunched the numbers, and we firmly believe that anyone that works for Pear and the Pickle deserves to be paid fairly.⠀
• ⠀
Beginning Wednesday, June 30, we will be eliminating the traditional tipping model and will be moving to a service-based model. This means that every check will include a 20% service charge. This service charge will help us provide a stable, living-wage for the people you see in the picture above. They’re worth it and they deserve it.⠀
• ⠀
We thank all of our incredible customers over this past year and we appreciate your support in advance as we make this big, but much-needed, change. ❤️
