Our revered sushi master, Mr. Shu, is retiring from his role as executive chef at Umi. We always knew this day would come, but we weren’t expecting it to be so soon. We fully trust that Mr. Shu knows what’s best after dedicating the last 26 years to making Umi one of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh. He is truly one of the greats, and there will never be another Mr. Shu.
Now he and Mrs. Shu, who has worked lovingly by his side for decades, will focus on spending time with friends and family. Their first stop will be Taiwan to visit loved ones for a few months.
Umi will be closing temporarily at the end of service on Saturday, October 4. We will pause to honor the end of one era and take some time to plan for the next. It’s not an easy task to find a chef as talented and skilled as Mr. Shu, so we certainly have our work cut out for us. We appreciate your patience and promise that it will be worth the wait.
While Mr. Shu is stepping down from his day-to-day responsibilities, it is our hope that he will serve as an advisor and consultant on a future iteration of Umi. He has laid a solid foundation to build upon and continue his legacy for years to come.
And to Mr. Shu: So long, and thanks for all the fish!
We’d love for you to leave your memories of Mr. Shu in the comments, and we’ll make sure they reach Chef. Thank you.
