A Slice of Murder takes us to a small North Carolina town, where pizzeria owner Elanor Swift makes a delivery and finds herself caught up in a murder investigation. With her spirited sister Maddy by her side, she sets out to clear her name, serving up small town secrets, sisterly banter, and plenty of pizza along the way.

So you guessed it… this week is artisanal pizza hand-crafted dough, house-made vibrant, zesty tomato sauce topped with your choice of melted cheese or cheese and savory pepperoni, finished with freshly picked basil straight from our garden.

Diamond Head by Cecily Wong

Novels and Nibbles follows the wealthy Leong family from China to Hawaii, where the murder of their patriarch sets off generations of secrets, heartbreak, and loss. Told through the family’s women, the story centers on eighteen-year-old Theresa, whose pregnancy forces her to confront the family’s tangled past. Woven around the Chinese legend of the red string of fate, this novel explores love, sacrifice, and whether we can break free from the mistakes of those who came before us. Ooh. Intriguing! Legends, death, and secrets, this sounds like a good one!

This book screams Spicy Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl which is why we are having it this week! Marinated Ahi tuna finds its destiny upon a snowy bed of sushi rice. Shredded carrots and green onions weave bright ribbons through the bowl, while avocado and cucumber bring the cool hush of a jade garden. Crispy Sriracha edamame carries the dragon’s fire, and a swirl of Sriracha mayo binds flavors together and readies them to be devoured because this dish is just that tasty.

Novels and Nibbles caters to the littlest Small Café guests this week. Biscuit and Gravy are called heroes after saving their town’s fire station. Curious about who else helps their community, they set out to find other hometown heroes and learn about the important jobs these people do. They found firefighters, farmers and many others reminding us you do not need a cape to make a difference. So true. Bonus…the picture book also includes a seek-and-find activity for readers!

Guess what we have this week?! Biscuits and Gravy. YES! Once upon a breakfast, two big fluffy buttermilk biscuits snuggled under a cozy blanket of creamy sausage gravy. Then two eggs, cooked any way you like, joined the adventure. A sprinkle of green onions added a little magic, and they all lived yummily ever after. The End!

We're always proud of or Small Cafe chefs and the hard work and love they both put into every dish. Today we're especially proud of Chef Jameson! He was invited to speak at the joint Lee & Chatham County Food Safety Summit, and he did a fantastic job.
His presentation was informative, entertaining, and proof that he can even make food safety a crowd-pleaser!👏🏽👏🏽

Novels and Nibbles takes us on a nostalgic trip back to America’s favorite blended family.

The Brady Bunch Book is filled with stories, photographs, and fun behind-the-scenes details. This delightful book celebrates the beloved television family that brought us bell-bottoms, sibling squabbles, and plenty of groovy adventures. Who can forget Marcia, Marcia, Marcia, and our special this week gives a playful nod to Peter Brady’s unforgettable “pork chops and applesauce” line.

We are having just that for this week’s special Pork Chops & Applesauce with some yummy creamed potatoes thrown in there too. A buttermilk marinated pork chop from our local O’Quinn’s Butcher Shop, breaded with seasoned flour and fried, served with creamy mashed potatoes and applesauce house-made, but first handpicked right from our apple tree in the front yard. Can’t get fresher than that!

Here’s a story about a lovely pork chop that met some fresh applesauce and it was much more than a hunch that they would make a tasty lunch or brunch!

James and the Giant Peach by Ronald Dahl

Novels and Nibbles grasp the final days of peach season with this story about James, an orphan who lives with his two cruel aunts. After a mysterious old man gives James a paper bag filled with magical crystals and tells him to follow his instructions and something wonderful will happen, clumsy James trips and spills the crystals by the old peach tree. A giant peach grows with giant friendly insects inside that become his friends and they face many perils together, successfully crossing the ocean to NYC. A whimsical story of courage, friendship and discovering family doesn’t have to be related by blood.

Grilled Peach Toast with Pimento Cheese and the combo is just heavenly on your tongue. La Farm’s Melange Boule is thick cut and grilled so it has that perfect crunchy softness.
