🇮🇹 THE GAROFALO FAMILY LEGACY: PART 3 🇺🇸

Eight Became Fifteen. The Greatest Generation.

As we continue celebrating Italian American Heritage Month, we're sharing the family history behind Caffe Boa owner Patrick Larson.

Last week, we introduced the Garofalo family home on Goodrich Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Italian immigrants Marco and Mary Garofalo raised their eight children.

Their seventh child, Mathew Garofalo, was born in 1916. And if you thought eight children under one roof was impressive, wait until you hear what happened next.

When World War II came, Mathew answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Army.

Meanwhile, Marie Kathryn Lanoux, born in St. Paul in 1917, was making history of her own, serving in the U.S. Navy during the war.

Two veterans. One love story. And a family legacy neither could have imagined.

Mathew and Marie married on September 21, 1947, and began their life together in the very same Goodrich Avenue home where Mathew had grown up.

And then came the children.

Not two. Not five. Not even ten.

FIFTEEN! Eight boys and seven girls!

All raised under the same roof where Mathew had grown up alongside his seven siblings.

Mathew supported his growing family while running an automotive repair business out of his garage. And through it all, Goodrich Avenue remained home.

In fact, Mathew would spend his entire 92 years of life on Goodrich Avenue, while his marriage to Marie lasted 50 years, until her passing in 1998.

Among those 15 children was their sixth, Maureen Therese Garofalo, born in 1953.

And it's through Maureen that this extraordinary family story would eventually find its way from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Ahwatukee, Arizona.

Next week, we'll bring our Italian American Heritage Month series full circle and share how the Garofalo family legacy became part of the story behind Caffe Boa.

🇮🇹 THE GAROFALO FAMILY LEGACY: PART 2 🇺🇸

One House. Eight Children. Generations of History.

As we celebrate Italian American Heritage Month, we're sharing the family history behind Caffe Boa owner Patrick Larson.

Last week, we introduced Marco Garofalo and Mary Cossetta, two young Italian immigrants who found each other in Ashland, Wisconsin, and married in 1901.

Their next chapter took them to St. Paul, Minnesota, where they settled into a home on Goodrich Avenue.

Over the next 18 years, Marco and Mary welcomed eight children into the world. Four sons, four daughters, all growing up under one roof.

Their home became the foundation for generations of Garofalos, a place where the family's Italian roots continued to grow in America.

Among their eight children was Mathew Garofalo, born in 1916, the seventh child and grandfather of Caffe Boa owner Patrick Larson.

While Marco and Mary had traveled thousands of miles to begin a new life, they couldn't have imagined how much of their family's future would unfold at that one address.

Pictured here is the Goodrich Avenue house as it stands today, following a remodel. After more than a century of family history, the home was sold just a couple of years ago. The appearance and ownership may have changed, but its place in the Garofalo family story never will.

And as impressive as eight children under one roof might sound, the next generation was about to make those numbers look small.

From Calabria to America 🇮🇹🇺🇸
For Italian American Heritage Month, we're going back to where Patrick's family story in America began.
These are his great grandparents, Marco Garofalo and Mary Cossetta.
Marco was born in Marzi, Calabria in 1869. At 23 years old, he left Italy for America, arriving in New York in 1892.
Mary's roots were there too. Born to Italian parents in 1883, she spent her childhood in Marzi before making the journey to America at only 16 years old, traveling with her grandmother.
Two young people left the same small village in southern Italy for a country thousands of miles away.
Their paths eventually crossed in Ashland, Wisconsin, where Marco had gone to work on the railroad.
They married there on April 18, 1901.
And with that, the Garofalo family's American story had begun.
More than 125 years later, we're still telling it.
