Italian ice traces its roots back to Sicilian granita and was brought to America by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The frozen treat became especially popular in New Jersey, New York, and the Philadelphia region, where it became known as "water ice."

New Jersey actually has a special place in Italian ice history.

One of the earliest Italian ice businesses in America, DiCosmo's, was founded in Elizabeth in 1915

Another longtime favorite, Little Jimmy's Italian Ices, started in Elizabeth and Linden in the 1930s, selling Italian ice from trucks and carts to factory workers and neighborhoods throughout the area
