Welcome to The Camac Street Reader: a series where we celebrate the art, history, and culture that our community is built on.

The Birdcage turns 30 this year, and its legacy on q***r visibility only grows sweeter with time. The story traces back to Jean Poiret’s French play La Cage aux Folles, which ran nearly 1,800 performances in Paris before becoming a hit French-Italian film in 1978. For the 1996 American remake, the material found its way to two comedy legends: Mike Nichols and Elaine May, whose iconic improv duo in the late 1950s and early ‘60s helped define a generation of American comedy before evolving into one of film’s great director-writer partnerships.

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane starred as Armand and Albert, a devoted couple running a Miami drag club, with Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Hank Azaria, and Christine Baranski rounding out the cast.

Lane’s performance as Albert became especially iconic, earning him a Golden Globe nomination and helping usher warm, funny, fully dimensional gay characters into mainstream American film. The Birdcage went on to earn an Oscar nomination for its production design and a SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble, grossing over $185 million worldwide.

Three decades later, it remains a touchstone for how far — and how joyfully — q***r representation has come.

Surf & Turf Special — Last Night!

Tonight’s your last chance at this week’s surf and turf.

From the surf: Grilled Red Snapper with smoked carrots in a lobster stock and ginger reduction — an Asian-inspired flavor that’s a little outside the Tavern norm (and worth it).

From the turf: a 6oz Petite Filet crusted in ancho chili and coriander, pan-seared to perfection, plated with in-season fiddlehead ferns for an asparagus-like bite, finished in a peppercorn sauce and topped with house-made cornbread crumbles.

New specials drop tomorrow — come say goodbye to these two tonight.

Welcome to The Camac Street Reader: a series where we celebrate the art, history, and culture that our community is built on.

Every Fourth of July, Fire Island erupts into one of q***r history’s most fabulous acts of resistance: The Invasion of the Pines. It began in 1976, when a Cherry Grove drag queen named Terri Warren was turned away from a restaurant in the neighboring, more conservative Fire Island Pines simply for being in drag. Outraged, her friends struck back — not with anger, but with glamour. Led by Cherry Grove’s newly crowned Homecoming Queen, Thom Hansen (better known as Panzi), a boatload of drag queens sailed across the harbor in full regalia and “invaded” the Pines. What could have been a confrontation turned into a joyous welcome, and a tradition was born.

Fifty years later, the Invasion still sails on: queens parading through Cherry Grove, boarding the ferry, and arriving to a roaring crowd in the Pines. A protest turned celebration, and proof that showing up in full glamour can be its own form of defiance.

This week’s chef’s cut is DUCK on DUCK on DUCK on DUCK.

Four ways to fall in love with one bird: dry-aged duck breast, a tiny cabbage braised in duck confit, and a pan-seared duck pâté terrine on cornbread cooked in rendered duck fat.

Start things off with the chef’s take on Oysters Rockefeller — four on the half shell, melted butter, toasted breadcrumb, and chorizo fat for heat, finished with edible marigold for a citrus note.

Plus our chef’s favorite summer salad: quartered red plums, charred Jersey corn, toasted hazelnuts, goat cheese, and pickled chilis, tossed light in olive oil and lemon.

Welcome to The Camac Street Reader: a series where we celebrate the art, history, and culture that our community is built on.

Today is New York City Pride — and its roots run deep.
It began in the summer of 1969, when Greenwich Village erupted in resistance against decades of police harassment and criminalization of q***r life. One year later, thousands took to the streets in what became the first Gay Pride March in American history — 51 blocks from Christopher Street to Central Park. No permits, no precedent. Just courage.

From those first marchers who weren’t sure the city would let them through, NYC Pride has grown into one of the largest gatherings on earth — millions strong, spanning every borough, every identity, every generation.

Fifty-some years later, the party is still the protest.

Kicking things off with Pickled Mussels prepared in herb and citrus, served with Mighty Bread sourdough. Next up, Yellowfin Tuna Tartare for two or more — kumquat vinaigrette, Aleppo pepper for a kick, and shaved shallots for that perfect bite.

Slider lovers, we see you. Say hello to the Crab Cake Slider — creole style, house-made remoulade, topped with sweet pea shoots for a fresh, crunchy finish.
