It is with profound love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Ena Juniarsah Widjojo, our beloved ibu, grandma and chef whose life, generosity, and talent enriched the hearts of all who met her. Ena passed away on December 24, 2025, at the age of 73.
She was born on April 24, 1952, in Indonesia. She carried the heart and soul of her homeland’s traditions and flavors across the ocean, finding a new home in New York & eventually Philadelphia. Together with our dad, she founded Hardena in 2001, a humble eatery in South Philadelphia that would grow into a cherished landmark & cornerstone of the city’s dining scene. She brought not just her family’s recipes, but her heart—and somehow, she turned that heart into a home for so many people.
Hardena was, and continues to be, an expression of my mom’s heart. Each dish told a story of love & family. Hardena became not only a restaurant but a place of community, where neighbors and newcomers alike found warmth, comfort, and connection at her table.
As her daughters, Maylia, Stephanie, and I grew up watching her pour her whole self into everything she made. She taught us that feeding people is one of the purest ways to show love, have pride in our culture, and support our family. That same spirit lives on through us today—through Hardena, and now also through Rice & Sambal, where we carry her legacy forward. Everything we do is guided by her lessons, her recipes, and the way she saw the world: with open arms and an open heart.
We will announce a celebration of her life soon. For now we will be operating at cut hours to mourn her loss. If you can consider donating to our GoFundMe to help offset medical, funeral, and closing shop costs or support us when we are back open, we would greatly appreciate the help from our community. We would love to hear your stories about mom if you have any to share ❤️. We never get enough time with our loved ones, but stories help keep their memory alive.
