This gorgeous little bite is our first course on our May Menu, Pastel. Pastels are Indonesian style empanadas, they are influenced by the Portuguese! While similar to the Portuguese pastry, the Indonesian version evolved to local tastes and are variations of stuffing include vermicelli, chicken/beef, potatoes, carrots, and sometimes boiled eggs. Ours is stuffed with potato, vermicelli and mushrooms topped with picked shimeji mushroom, Sambal aioli & lemongrass & wild ramp chimichurri!

You know the one thing I’m most proud of when thinking of my menu every month? Is that I try to make our monthly menu match our veg menu visually or in taste. I love hearing from our veg community tell us that they didn’t feel left out or that they’re glad we didn’t just offer them a salad! I mean there will be at least one salad but you know what I mean 😋
When you make your reservation, please make sure you specify that you want it vegan/vegetarian/pescatarian so we have it ready for you! The reason we like to know before hand is so that your experience is seamless!

This light and refreshing salad on our April prix fixe menu is called Asinan. A traditional pickled salad of fruits and vegetables. The flavor profile is sweet usually from sugar or palm sugar, sour from vinegar or tamarind, spicy and depending on the variety, funky! The asinan I grew up with had shrimp paste in it giving it an extra layer of funk and umami.
The veg and fruits in Asinan can vary but most popular fruits would be mango, pineapple and apple. Ours has an emphasis on root vegetables so julienned heirloom carrots (shown in yesterday’s photo!) Jicama, watermelon radish, fresh greens, cucumber and pineapple! The regular version has shrimp paste and the vegan is simply without shrimp paste!

I love springtime! Just sharing these gorgeous carrots that are in the Asinan salad on our prix fixe menu which I will post a picture of tomorrow. Always love going to farmers markets & supporting our local farmers whenever possible. One of my favorite parts of my job.
