President Theodore Roosevelt was but the first of a long line of celebrities Ralph's has been host to over the past 111 years. Located at our current address, 760 S. 9th Street, since 1915, we have hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Tom LaSorda, Joey Giardello, Rocky Marciano, Sergio Franci, Al Martino, Sammy Davis Jr., Michael Keaton, Heather Locklear, Dom DeLuise and countless others. Philadelphia luminaries from Connie Mack to Mayor Frank Rizzo have found Ralph's just the right place for dinner. More recently, star sports figures like Phillies past and present GMs Pat Gillick and Ruben Amaro Jr., Florida University football coach Urban Meyer, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa, NBA great Charles Barkley and Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada of the New York Yankees have stopped in for meals. In additon to athletes, Vice President Joe Biden has dined at Ralph's! Today, America celebrates 250 years of independence.

For over half of that journey, Ralph’s has had the privilege of serving generations of families from the very same corner of South Philadelphia.

Since 1900, we’ve watched neighborhoods grow, traditions endure, and countless memories made around our tables. Through changing times, one thing has remained the same: a commitment to family, authentic Italian cooking, and the community that’s supported us for more than 125 years.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we’re grateful to be a small part of the history that continues to shape this great country.

Why Sangweech? 🇮🇹🥖

We’ve had a lot of people ask us about the name of our Sangweech Menu, so here’s a little piece of history.

When many Italian immigrants came to America, they embraced the culture around them while holding tightly to the traditions they brought from home. As they learned a new language, certain words took on a life of their own, shaped by accents, dialects, and generations of family conversations.

One of those words was sandwich, which in many Italian American households became sangweech.

It’s more than just a pronunciation. It’s a reflection of a shared history and a reminder of the journey so many families took to build new lives while preserving their heritage.

That’s the inspiration behind Uncle Jimmy’s Sangweech Menu. It’s our way of honoring those roots while celebrating the unique Italian American culture that has been part of Ralph’s for over 125 years.

Sometimes, a single word can tell quite a story 🇮🇹❤️
