has made major strides when it comes to in the last decade:
π±
Let's start with - the city created a model for decentralized composting when Pennsylvania issued its first-ever urban composting permit to us in 2022.
We also currently work with the city to reduce at its rec centers, and at its agricultural sciences high school, WB Saul, among other projects. We're also partnering with hyper-local organizations, like the New Kensington CDC, to create innovative new composting solutions for neighborhood residents.

The Plastic Bag Ban has eliminated an estimated 200 million plastic bags from distribution since 2022, reducing pollution in our vulnerable city ecosystems, especially watersheds.
π¦
The Green City, Clean Waters initiative is a 25-year stormwater management program using rain gardens, green roofs, permeable pavement, and bioswales to capture runoff and reduce urban flooding
π³
The Philly Tree Plan outlines a 10-year strategy to expand the city's tree canopy, particularly in underserved neighborhoods, to reduce urban heat islands and improve air quality.
Every day, your choices add up to the city you actually live in. When you start composting, you're voting for a city that smells better, has fewer overflowing trash bags on the sidewalk, and gives pests and rodents less reason to stick around.
You're choosing a city that's self-reliant, one that takes the organic material right here in our neighborhoods and turns it into something useful - rather than shipping the problem somewhere else.
And more than anything, you're choosing to be the kind of person who doesn't look away from their own footprint. In a city working as hard as Philly is to build a more sustainable future, that accountability, practiced block by block, household by household, is what makes all the difference.
